Best of the Bargain Basement (Vol.3)
Discussion
Dragging this thread back up as I now have something worthy of posting.
I needed to buy a daily driver, to keep the miles/wear and tear off of my modified Volvo C30 T5. I had been running around in a 1.4 petrol 206 that my parents had going spare, but HGF put paid to that.
So with some money burning a hole in my pocket, I decided to get myself something nicer to sit in.
I present to you, the results of spending £1300:
2006 Honda Civic 2.2 i-CTDI Sport. It's reasonable in every way.
So far, impressions have been good. I've done around 1k miles in it over the last 3 weeks, including a trip from Oxford to Bournemouth and back. Everything works, except for the air con which I'm really hoping just needs a regas - if it's anything more than that, it can stay broken.
It's got dents, knocks and scrapes all over it - 12 years and 145,000 miles does that to a car. For me, it just increases the no-fks-given aspect of ownership. Unlike the Volvo, I'm not bothered leaving this in supermarket car parks or town centres, and I don't have to plan my routes around avoiding speed bumps and the like as this isn't lowered. It smelled a bit inside when I got it, but sponge-cleaning the seats and spraying a lot of Febreze on the fabrics seems to have dealt with the issue nicely.
55mpg combined is a nice change from the 23-25 I see from the Volvo too!

Looks good. Is the clutch ok as that is a weak point on them.
Glad to see people like the stvic!
300k is reassuring - I've set myself the challenge of getting it to 200k, anything beyond that is a bonus for me.
The clutch is fine, and it cropped up locally on Auto Trader. I had been looking at Accords with the same engine, but I don't need the extra size (no kids/family etc to get in here), plus the only Accords for anything close to this money all looked pretty shagged.

Well that's not good, I've just bought a ctdi accord for £550..It's only slightly shagged.
So tomorrow £600 182 goes in for a re-mot after failing the emissions big style.
The garage has a big box of parts to play with , o2 sensor , new plugs, ht leads and coil packs , injectors and fuel rail so fingers crossed .
Meanwhile the £500 puma has carried on doing the daily duties with no fuss .

My free* Puma has been doing its job with zero complaints. It creaks a Hell of a lot less than the Saab it replaced.
The brake warning light was flickering on and off the other day but a top-up of brake fluid has sorted that out. Might be that there's a minor leak somewhere in the system but I've got plenty fluid to keep it topped up throughout the summer if needs be.

- Well, free in the sense no money changed hands, but I swapped a 9-3 with borked air con and shagged suspension for it.

I shall get it round a mate's and get it on his ramp at the weekend so we can see where the leak's coming from - I topped it up last week and the light hasn't come back on yet so hopefully it's not too serious.
A "not too serious" leak becomes a serious leak when you stomp on the brake pedal in an emergency, and the "not too serious" leak suddenly becomes a massive split in the brake hose(s)....GeordieInExile said:
