yeh i thought the 2.0 had one. in all my used cars a dmf has never failed.
I've never had a DMF fail either, but it is one thing that could easily write off a car of thread value so it's worth knowing about

there are smf conversations and to right the car off sounds stupid, BB is a gamble and can cost money.

Agreed. But if one car has a solid flywheel and another has a dual mass, I can see why you'd go for the former over the latter when you're buying at this level

I read up on this a while ago when I was last looking for a shed, and it seems the 1.6 diesel didn't have a DMF but the 2.0 diesel did have a DMF
The 2.0 is very different to the 1.6. It also has a cambelt where the 1.6 is chain driven.

It seems to be that the weak parts of the Ceed are the suspension/subframe and door tops mechanically they're pretty good as BB motors.

Apologies, I forgot about the 2.0 Kia diesel. My 1.6 has been perfectly adequate transport and drives reasonably well. They're good BB choices imo

I didn't realise these were that cheap. I know the dashboard is all Corsa C and that was disappearing by 2006, but it seems a decent car for the money.

I don't want it, but since my Astra is being pensioned off, a 2.0 turbo conversion in one of these would be fun. It's well-documented for the Corsa C, so I assume it's similar for these Tigra Bs

Will be jumping on the bangernomics bandwagon at some point this year...

Am I thinking along the right lines with the following? Tried to look for ones with good history/low miles.

My dad had one of those, they are good cars. Only thing to watch out for, which may not apply to the age, fuel, you are looking at, is the DMF/clutch goes on the diesels and can be pretty pricey. I had a Lexus, same issue and was circa £1400 to fix.

The first car you linked, the Toyota Avensis at a grand, is where my money would go.

Thanks, any particular reason you’d choose that over the others? Or is it just personal preference?

Toyota in general is known as a reliable manufacturer, it's a larger car and a class above the others (think Mondeo rather than Focus) and it has decent toys. I suppose these things invariably come down to preference though, and as a driver of an old Lexus I'm probably biased.

Yes, the Toyota looks best vfm for comfort, refinement and reliability.

But if your looking for a fun drive on a budget I'd recommend the Mk1 Focus. They're getting on a bit now, and they do rust, but that one looks very tidy. The 1.6 will keep you busy with the gear-lever to get the best out of it, but it's a sweet revving unit and the gear-change is good.
Cheap to run, too - should easily do mid 30s mpg.

None of my money would ever go near a car for sale in Bradford.

I've been shedding an avensis for past year. There's a thread on my experiences. Had my ups and downs with it but compared to what I was driving before... I am way better off financially.

Only bad thing is that I have a very intermittent issue with clutch, no idea what it is but I don't fancy buying a new clutch until I need one.
