I've never heard an exhaust I liked the sound of on these things.

Keep it standard.
Agree, don't go Barry-ing around with a 'Milly'.

Does it have a V8?
I couldn't really tell from the article, you'd have thought they'd mention it

Hate to say it but you'd be better off with the 3.0 TDI !

There's less than a second 0-60mph times 5.1 over 5.9 , yet you get nearly double the MPG - 22 vs 39 (manuf claimed). Also the V6 is a bit lighter over the front than the V8 although this is negligible as no A5 is a drivers car anyway!

For those crying "yeah what about the V8" well sorry, but it's quite muted anyway as others have said.

Buy a B7 RS4 instead.

If you're doing alot of miles, then yes. If not, it's a complete waste of time.

I don't want a diesel unless i really have to. A V8 S5 is so much more appealing to me than any diesel out there.

I'm not really in the camp that worships a V8 personally. I just see big lumps like this as inefficient, old technology that makes for a nose heavy car (excluding mid engined supercars)

I'm running an F10 M5 at the moment and while brutally fast, the fact it's a V8 doesn't do much for me emotionally boxedin

The F10 M5 is the least V8 sounding motor ever.

The glorious V10 that preceded it raised the bar so much and then to have that as its replacement was so disappointing.

Jumped timing chain comes to mind.

Had one with a Miltek exhaust as my first attempt at consolidating a fun car and a daily shed into a single fun all-rounder used for everything.

Car sounded great with a smooth and cultured V8 warble, looked nice in my eyes from most angles albeit a bit flat from side-on, and went OK'ish (after a carbon clean and revo map).

Ultimately it annoyed me to the point of selling up with, in order of annoyance:
- ridiculous range of around 240miles from a pretty hefty thirst combined with a tiny tank
- horrible clutch action and anti-stall system making low speed manoeuvring pretty awful
- very inert joyless handling
- completely feel-free steering
- poor gear ratio's especially 6th
- a persistent wobble at motorway speeds due an inbuilt design issue with the front suspension arms (subject to a tech bulletin in the USA).

Replaced with a manual e91 335i which was much better and almost on a par performance wise as standard, of course another level of practical and with much more potential from the N54 if that way inclined.

Yeah it's quite muted - that's turbos for you though. it's pretty spicy in M modes when the exhaust flaps open

We have a 3.0tdi and that's ok for cruising but it steers and handles like sh!t. I can't imagine these being much better.

I've driven an RS5 and they do sound good but I couldn't put up with the bad mpg for such a rubbish drive.

Ps, the A5 is my wife's and she loves it but she is far from a keen driver

A few years ago I was detailing cars as a second job. One of my regular clients had, amongst other things, a 3.0tdi quattro sport A5, then an S5.

The tdi went quite well but tramlined terribly on the 19s it had.

The S5 was a tiptronic not manual. It drove better than the tdi but never felt that quick to me. It felt as if the 'box muted the performance.

As for the interiors they are definately not as well built as some think. Loose bits of trim a lighter leather really bad for staining from clothing.

I like the styling of them and it's a nice place to sit. At 10k ish it's a lot of car but will always be a boat unless you chuck some cash at it.

And it will cost to run it. Oh will it cost.........................

These do suffer with carbon build up. They run a timing chain, while the chain was to last the life time of the engine the guides fail. It’s a £3000 engine out job, factor this into your budget.

The v6t that replaced these are better in every way, except the sound track.

Had one of these for over 4 years, great all around package but ultimately underwhelming as a drivers car.

The handling was boat like, but it was quick enough and the standard exhaust note was nice and burbly without being too shouty or obnoxious.

The interior still looks ok for a 10 year old design and the body styling has aged really well in my opinion.

A great car for the money - was sad to see mine go.
Is the handling really that bad?

I have a 1.9tdi avant for daily duties and I would say that handles like a boat. I would of thought the suspension etc would be substantially upgraded for the twisty stuff in one of these?

Or maybe there are aftermarket solutions that bring it to life a bit?

Seems like a lot of car for the money, but 'boat like' handling does put me off.

You could argue that Audi embraced downsizing even in their V8 era as this thing only displaced 4.16 litres

I bought one this time two years ago and ran it for a few months. Apart from the crazy fuel consumption it was a pretty awesome car! Looks great, strong performance and very comfortable as a cruiser. It felt more like a Grand Tourer than a performance car but for £10k I don't think you can do much better. Mine was an Automatic which I think suited it's character better.

How bad is the fuel consumption?

I view around 21/22mpg for a V8 like this as par for the course. Can't be worse than that on average surely?

This makes my e90 335i that I'm about to sell seem like great value!!!

Nearly 4 years newer, better spec, 5k less miles, almost as quick, drives better, averages 29mpg in the real world and doesn't cost £500 a year to tax. Oh and it seats 5. Admittedly it's 2 cylinders light.

I was going to price mine just under 10k. Maybe I should go for more?

As much as I think a V8 with a manual gearbox is pretty special, I was on another forum earlier where someone posted a link to a 99K miles E39 M5 up for £9,991.

I know which I'd prefer! laugh

I bloody love the way these look and sound with that V8. But everyone I have spoken too says they are just a soggy lump to drive.

I suspect some kw coilovers and an alignment would help. Really fancy one of these in a few years.
