I ran one of these, with tiptronic box, for 12 months which replaced a E92 335i (with the earlier N54 engine).

I have to say the BMW was a much better drive. Performance wise they feel about the same but for driver involvement/engagement the BMW was much more effective.

Perhaps it was that stupid lazy gearbox which ruined the car. It never felt that fast and you really had to wind the engine up to get any urgency, not what you'd expect from a V8.

I had one of these a few years ago, really great car. I had my fair share of common niggles with it (swirl flaps issues, clutch hydraulics etc) but otherwise it was to date the most comfortable car i've ever owned for long jaunts through Europe. Fuel consumption never really got north of 20mpg but that was mostly my fault! So much car for £10k

I use to own a S5 V8. It was a lovely car, great for cruising and lugging the family around. It was solid... no issues at all in the 5.5 years of ownership.

If you moan about a v8 mpg one has to question why you bought it in the first place.

I love reading these threads, I don't post much but felt I had to with this one.

I have a v8 manual car (not an S5) and knew exactly what I was getting into.

I laugh at most of the comments on here .. buy the 3.0 diesel tiptronic, it's almost as quick and is more fuel efficient biggrin really? Awe man - what was I thinking buying that v8, with the lovely woofle - what I really wanted was a car that sounded like a tractor and went further on a tank of fuel.

It's expensive, no s**t Sherlock. It's a v8. Again, what was I thinking, I'd have expected to get at least 50 around town and why didn't anyone tell me that the road tax was extortionate. What a complete surprise.

Are people really this stupid?

There's this big thing called the interweb. When I want a car, I generally decide what's important to me, noise, fuel economy, do some googling and then go test drive some cars. I buy the one I like.

I'm pretty sure if I'm looking at an S5 because I see the attraction in that v8, and want a manual - I'm going to find out pretty quickly it's got a lovely noise, it's crap on fuel, it's expensive to tax and run and it's not the sharpest handler with a big lump of an engine hanging out past the front axle.

I'm also pretty sure someone then suggesting I should have bought the diesel auto a) isn't helping b) thinks I'm an idiot (may be true) and c) has wasted 2 minutes of my time reading the comment ..

Golf R anyone? I'm sure it's cheaper on PCP, quicker, more fuel efficient, and infinitely more boring but hey that doesn't seem to count with the top trumps game usually played on here ..
Well given that post it's good for all you don't post that often.

Is the S6 no longer available? It has a V8.
Yup but with 2 turbos, really considering one at the moment as it goes end of life June and some good discounts, "last of the V8 interceptors" lol
Planning on going into it fully eyes open, I had a b6 S4 and a sports car it wasn't, great cruiser with a good turn of speed, actually quite liked the quieter v8 rumble that got loud at the topsmile

Such handsome cars, it’s just a shame about how they drive.

I replaced an auto S4 Avant V8 with a manual S4 cabrio V8. The manual gearbox absolutely ruins the car.

It was more in contest that the only V* Audi make was the RS6, when it also goes in the S6.

Nope. Mine doesn't use a drop between services.

This thread is quite timely, I've been considering one of these recently so it's interesting to hear owners views on them.

They seem to be tough ones to sell; lots of them around, thirsty, high VED and getting on a bit now.

Mine took a couple of months to shift, to a trader no less, at much less than I had anticipated. The dealership has had it up for 2 and a half months and has dropped the price twice now too, yet it's still up for sale.

Good luck...

I had a similar experience when selling my B8 S4, was a PITA to shift and it went to a trader for a little bit less than I ideally wanted. I now lease a B9 S5, at least then its somebody else's problem to sell!

I also have a N54 E93 335i, Mine is the DCT auto box and has a JB-4 re-map. I almost bought an S5 instead and after reading this i'm glad i didn't! Im sure the BMW must be faster with a smoother gearbox and handling. The only thing i disagree with is the fuel consumption claim that the BMW is better... In my experience it's definitely not, I average 20 mpg

Considered an S4/S5, BMW 6 or monaro for my next car as I cover a low mileage and, to be honest, time is running out if you want to own a car like this - eventually they will be priced off the road.

The monaro is favourite - low tech and less likely to bankrupt you. German stuff is somewhat over rated in terms of reliability.
