When I bought my second one it had Dunlops on it - the road noise on the journey home was horrendous! The tyres weren't very old either but they were completely intolerable on the motorway. First thing I did was swap them for Toyos.

Ok, so I'll bite (as nobody else has).

What makes an R26R not a hot hatch? It is a hatchback, and pretty fast (so hot right?), or am I missing something.
Because it’s in a different league? Ok maybe the R26r is more of a crossover car. You seriously can’t see the blur between a Clio Sport/Fiesta ST e.t.c and something like a golf R/A45 AMG?
I agree, they aren't in the same class, but that doesn't stop them being hot hatches surely? Super hatches maybe? Don't get me wrong, I know that comparing older hot hatches with anything of the modern lot can be a bit tough as the game has moved on quite a bit. I'm not sure changing their categories would help all that much though.
Then again, if it stops people from confusing anything older (and slower than the current lot) and calling them "mild" may help.

Lupo certainly looks a hell of a lot nicer there. The Up just looks like a teenagers first car that crashed into Halfords in comparison. Granted though, for its time, the Up is better value / cheaper, but it looks it.

Also is it just me or does the Up steering wheel look huge and bus like in comparison with the Lupos?

Are these really that ‘much’ better than the similar powered period rivals ? Erm, Corsa 1.8 SRi, Punto 1.8 HGT Just to name a few....

Or is it the VW scene tax that keeps values really high?

Not a bad effort to keep the UP to almost exactly 1000kg according to Autocar test

Best of 8.3 to 60 ( average of 8.5 ) and 25.7 to 100 so the Lupo is still king there with 7.7 and 23.8
Average 38.9 mpg
4 out of 5 stars
