Having had a R56 JCW for 4 years and not liking the F56 JCW (mainly steering feel) I was at a loss as to what to replace it with. Until this popped up. Had 21 miles on the clock and was like new. 2 months and 2000 miles in and I still can’t stop just popping out for a quick blast. The speed it can carry in and out of a corner is nothing short of a miracle and I still haven’t had a complete play with the set up. In fact I haven’t driven the GT4 since I got it! ( though that would mainly be the st weather)
It looks like a wheeled version of this man.

I'm biased but think the Audi S1 should also be considered at that segment and price point. 230bhp and 4wd, Audi build quality, racing pedigree, relative rarity (not as much as the Yaris admittedly).
Although the S1 starts at £27k OTR and a quick browse I’d say you’d need a few extras so you’re soon touching £30k. Whilst they’re all sold I would like to see Toyota Yaris GRMN vs Abarth 595 Competizione or 695 biposto as delivery mileage cars are the same price.
Not sure the particular model but a mini passed by me at a crossing doing about 20mph with such a deep rumble and more pops bangs and overruns than you can imagine all piloted by the most run of the mill office worker you can imagine. Ugh sounded stupid who wants a mini that pretends to sound like a lamb?
Quite interesting reading through some of the posts on the new MINI F56. I'm not a fan myself.
Agreed that it's just too big.
Makes the R50/R53 look small in comparison and not just that but perfectly proportioned too.
I love my R53 works. Subtle without too much going on. And still plenty quick with 210bhp to play with.

Whatever the outcome of a twin test I could never buy the MINI on accounts of the looks and the image.
A hot Yaris on the other hand, especially as I work in a garden centre where the car park is full of them
As someone above said, I'd rather it looked a bit more of a sleeper as that would make it even funnier.

Can I be honest with my thoughts!!???
Both are a pile of st, IMO. The Toyota, well, just look at it, it's HORRIBLE
The Mini..... these are for girls who shop at Jack Wills and "lunch". The sort of people who spend their spare time in "Designer Outlets".
Their levels of performance are irrelevant - they are still awful not matter how much BHPs you throw at them.

Agreed completely.
I contorted it and manipulated it and tortured it but just could not get it to sound right. Then gave up and admired the Mini instead. Even 'Works 210' flows and is slightly alliterative.
Toyota marketing folk who worked on this should be sacked and replaced pronto.
Somebody in text above referred to the GRMN as a "Gremlin". That, I think is perhaps the neatest way to transliterate it into something that fits the tongue. It has the added bonus of bringing demonic, gnarled, mischievous and evil connotations which the otherwise round and cuddly Yaris could do with. There was the 1970 AMC Gremlin I guess... maybe a less good association.I contorted it and manipulated it and tortured it but just could not get it to sound right. ...doesn't a, "GT-86 Gremlin" sound like a World War II fighter plane? What better naming result could there possibly be? I'd buy one tomorrow.

Yaris £26.3k, Mini £28.3k as tested. As you say similar spec S1 ~£30k... Not much difference in the grand scheme of things. All being bought as toys, not for absolute best value fun A-to-B cars. Otherwise surely a Fiesta ST Mountune makes more sense. Whilst they’re all sold I would like to see Toyota Yaris GRMN vs Abarth 595 Competizione or 695 biposto as delivery mileage cars are the same price.

Ironically, you cant buy a new Works 210 nor a Fiesta ST (Mountune or otherwise) right now anyway. For what is their most modern offering, the Yaris doesnt stack up well in some areas:
Yaris:
Power (hp) 212@6,800rpm
Torque (lb ft) 184@4,800rpm
MPG 37.7 (NEDC combined)
CO2 170g/km
Mini:
Power (hp) 210@4,700rpm
Torque (lb ft) 221@1,250rpm
MPG 47.1 (NEDC combined)
CO2 139g/km
I expect the Toyota to be low on torque as Japanese cars are traditionally rev happy, but the mini will feel much more instantaneous and ready to go in any gear in comparison.
Also, the MPG and CO2 differences are big, especially when Toyota like to focus on their environmentally friendly approach (I know neither MPG will be real world, but knock off 10MPG each and you still are quite significantly better off in the Mini)
Yaris:
Power (hp) 212@6,800rpm
Torque (lb ft) 184@4,800rpm
MPG 37.7 (NEDC combined)
CO2 170g/km
Mini:
Power (hp) 210@4,700rpm
Torque (lb ft) 221@1,250rpm
MPG 47.1 (NEDC combined)
CO2 139g/km
I expect the Toyota to be low on torque as Japanese cars are traditionally rev happy, but the mini will feel much more instantaneous and ready to go in any gear in comparison.

Difference being that the Toyota will actually be able to achieve that figure in the real world whereas the Mini's figure is pure moonshineYaris:
