Done to death I know but ...

I know the press seem to say the Honda soft suspension setting is quite good ... but I struggle to get my head round dealing with 20" rims and silly low profile rubber on Blighty blacktop ?? !!

We're currently running a fairly extreme hatch as a daily on 18's and it certainly doesn't lack grip or turn in precision, ridiculous wheel sizes, IMHO of course !!

From pics, I think choosing black paint is the nearest thing, quite a bit more cohesive as it's all one colour then.

As a Cupra 300 ‘owner’ I’d have the Civic, I think it looks great and it’s clearly a serious bit of kit.

If only I could lease one for £270 month.

It really does seem like the current Type R is a cut above any of its competitors, dynamically at least.

And having seen a couple now on the road, they don’t look awful. Admittedly, they’re not pretty things but they’re certainly purposeful.
I agree, on the road they do not look as dramatic as in the pics.

To the article author: Do you actually test the cars with timing gear, weigh them yourself etc or are the figures from the manufacturer, some magazine etc?

They took a similar approach with the FK2, minimal, if any, discounting and hefty deposits, by the standards of their rivals anyway.

You would have to really want one to stump up what they're asking given what its rivals are available for..... And I do really want one biggrin

That really was a dreadful article to read. Utterly verbose and rammed with cliché.

The conclusion though, that the Civic Type R is head and shoulders above the competition, seems to be a bit of a theme. It really sounds as though Honda hit the nail on the head here. Were I shopping for a new hot hatch, the Civic would be the only consideration.

Agreed. Might still revolt some but I think it looks great in black:

I didn't like the Civic at first but its growing on me, it looks like a Rally car and that's what I would want from a hot hatch.

It’s the new build copper kitchen design
or the Fast and furious design, personally I’d take neither, one is a total mess oh my eyes,
the other just looks like a standard diesel car with copper crap stuck on it, never ever should copper crap be stuck on a car unless it’s from 1910

Ride is very good - maybe better on 18s, but for me more than acceptable as is.

Definitely. It's the one my Mrs is least horrified by!

Should be able to get 5% off. Autocar believe residuals will be pretty decent compared to the competition. Haven't looked at the deals on rivals - is there a big difference?

Is this from long term owner perspective?

Something I do miss from reviews like these, how is the rear seat and the boot? Much of the allure of any hot hatch is, for me, its practical usability. Since I have a Cupra, would be good to know how the CTR compares there too.

I agree with you on the looks of both cars - but not as strongly on the SEAT. I currently quite like the SEAT (particularly the alcantara seats & wheel) but think it will look date very quickly and when I first saw it the copper detailing was nothing I couldn't do with a rattle can or 2 & some masking tape to my FR Leon.

I think SEATs work best when they're really competitive on price, which the Cupra R isn't compared to the Type-R - the normal Cupra 300 is, particularly after the recent price reductions.

I'd save my money & my embarrassment and buy a Golf GTI Performance Pack over either of these - accepting the loss in performance.

Been for a couple of test drives in which I specifically drove round the crappy (concreted) bits of the M25. There's more road noise than in other cars I've owned, but the ride is good.
Agreed on practicality being key for hot hatch (something my old R26.R didn't have!). Boot is pretty substantial as mentioned here
