RE: Aston Martin Vantage: Driven

I’d personally take the new M5 if I was inconceivably wealthy
Interesting. Assuming that means the M5 is relevant (otherwise you wouldn't choose it), what is your definition of "relevant"?Aston: £120,000+, ~500BHP, ~500Nm, ~1500Kg, 2 seats and intended as a sportscar for the road and bought by folk who only need 2 seats
BMW: £90,000+, ~600BHP, ~750NM, ~1900Kg, 4 seats and intended as a prestigious road car and bought by folk who need more than 2 seats
Given that the full potential of either is unlikely ever to be realised on the highway, and that neither is likely to be a track toy, how is one more relevant than the other?

If you read that line again, it says the Porsche is a weight with fluids, and the Aston is dry, so that 80kgs probably becomes nearer 150kgs, now that's fairly significant.
Still need to see a GTS that actually weighs 1450kg with fluids, more like 1500kg+. I really don't like the dry weight thing, I guess they have to compete with Ferrari numbers... but to able to drive, one needs fliuds. Just give us all the numbers: dry, wet (fuelled) and EU weight. Not that hard...I reckon 150KG is probably a fairly accurate estimation of the difference in weight between the Aston and 911.
Anyway I for one am pleased Aston Martin has pulled it out of the bag, although the base price isn't far off the McLaren 540C, which is in a different performance league to the Aston.
I can definitely see why this is getting a hard time. The old Vantage is one of the most attractive cars ever made to my eyes. I don't think there's a single angle where it doesn't look incredible. The new one just doesn't look as good, especially from the front and side. I do love the rear / rear 3/4 view though.

Possibly in the mkt for 3/4 yr old V12 Vantage S this seems v expensive by comparison ...the front grill is a copy of the Vulcans but it seems too big to my eyes...side profile lovely and rear nice too but what's with the tiny exhausts ?? Needs bigger pipes for sure

Hard to please people on here, it's ridiculous!
Bunch of luddites on here. Can we not just celebrate this car? And the TVR that will come next year? This is a car to be celebrated, an Aston Martin that is firing, producing good, modern and genuinely competitive vehicles is a pin in the lapel of the british car industry. To my eyes it looks great, and would have this over a 911, R8, Granturismo etc every day of the week.
This AM looks the business, and most will be unique with the splashes of colour. Very well done AM.
But am I the only person who a) doesn't care about the Vantage v 911 comparison and b) doesn't want it to be as good?!
The 911 is the pinnacle of what is achievable around a circuit, but it looks like a, well a 911. It leaves me cold. I want an AM to be British - loud, charming and with flaws, or as I like to call them, character. In short, like the last one. And who didn't love that generation AMV8?
Leave Porsche to what they do best, and satisfy those in the market who want looks (and what looks), character and something that doesn't want to be a 911.

Absolutely fair enough, and you can always spec the rear diffuser in black..................................But am I the only person who a) doesn't care about the Vantage v 911 comparison and b) doesn't want it to be as good?!

Real smart alec...that base price is way above where the old v8 was and is now close to where the old v12 started, naturally aspirated v12 or turbo v8 no real contest for me but that's my subjective view RSbandit said:

The Hargreaves Lansdowne calculator says that £1 in 2003 is equivalent to £2 today, original Vantage around £60k? Typically, through the lifecycle of a vehicle, the list price will lag behind inflation, and then catches up with a new model (or major facelift).
As for the engine types, you can guarantee that there will be a Vantage S coming, probably with a higher output V8 borrowed from some variant of the AMG GT. I certainly cant see Aston being able to fit the new V12 in this one.
I think they will sell shed loads, its such a premium brand (in my eyes anyway) up there with the likes of Lambo and Ferrari, other than the cygnet thing they have never really diluted the brand.
If someone says they drive an Aston Martin I bet they always get a positive response, (unless its a cygnet, then they deserve a slap). Pretty much anyone can have a Mercedes/BMW/Porsche for a couple of grand, not so with Aston/F/Lambo

Like a lot of modern designs it seems to be very colour sensitive, having said that the front end looks like they all went down the pub and forgot to finish it. The race version definitely looks better (well, to my eyes). I could live with all that if the interior looked good but no, those buttons for the transmission and the air vents, strange nit-picking certainly, but I know I could never buy one. All academic as I'm never likely to have the money anyway but it's nice to dream. A 570 GT it is then.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
