Shmee, first off, due respect to you for the hardwork you put into your channel. I know it's so easy for us to criticise your work but you show a lot of maturity dealing with the negative criticisms and having watched your channel grow over the years, i can only say that the sky is the limit for you because you're always one step ahead of the game! What's happening with your plans in Germany? Are you still moving there and doing things around the Nurburgring? Also, great to see you're a fan of Harry's Channel also. What would you say are the top 5 YouTube channels you follow or 10 if you watch that much?
Well said. As much as I can only watch some of his videos including muting my laptop at the first 10secs Uber cringe ‘hi guys I’m shmee’, fair play for the amount of hard work and way in which you deal with most of the criticism (barring schmmmmarks slur recently)There’s a revolution going on with regard to tv viewing and clearly it is evolving at a rapid pace
Certainly the last couple of years had seen a massive change in the viewing habits in our house ( as in many I’d imagine)
Keep up the good work and keep ahead of the game

My favourite Harry video is the S1 Landie one, and now I want a Harry's Farm retro episode, doing the tasks around the farm using that with PTO attachments.
Sorry to report Series one at the menders at the moment. Each drum brake stopped working, one by one, which wasn't too bad as we only use it around the farm now. But when the only one working was the near-side rear and even then only probably at 50%, I decided to get it fixed..Maybe slightly off topic but considering the amount of stuff I watch on YouTube (can watch hours a day vs. never turning the TV on), I am considering getting the Premium offering. I understand this not only removes ads but offers an increased rate for content creators too.
Is this something you can track in your statistics? If so, what sort of percentages are any of you seeing? With YouTube being free for so long, I can't imagine the percentages are very high.

My channel is tiny compared to Shmee's (it's not car based) but here's my income breakdown between non-premium and premium viewers. Is this something you can track in your statistics? I took up a trial of YT premium a few months back and cancelled it after 2 weeks or so, as it was aggressively pushing all the YT premium exclusive stuff that I had no interest in. My recommendations page was just full of content I had no interest in and didn’t appear to behave the way it did previously, every ‘next video’ was some scripted content from one of the big creators. Not my thing so cancelled the trail and back to my 200+ subs of content I actually enjoy.

Thanks for kind comments and we're all getting older, it's a fact of life!
It's fun doing vids on a completely different subject to cars too, might get a little tougher to keep the pace of new vids appearing during the winter months but let's see.
Thanks again for the support. H
Superb videos Harry, the complete antithesis of all the other tripe on YouTube. Please just keep doing what you're doing, quality over quantity every time It's fun doing vids on a completely different subject to cars too, might get a little tougher to keep the pace of new vids appearing during the winter months but let's see.

I think the others should take a long hard look at Harry's Garage, it really is a great example of how to do it.
Unfortunately I think the others are focusing too hard on numbers at the cost of content. This 20 minute rule that people seem to go for now too is tedious, it's just to string out a story longer than it needs to be.
I subscribe to Shmee but I'm struggling lately, it's becoming less about the cars and more about the look at my flash car kinda thing. The being pulled over by the cops one was very cringey for my tastes (sorry Tim). I was looking forward to the America tour, and to be fair the garage tours have been interesting to see, but other than that I'm out.
Even Goonzquad who have been a long time favourite of mine since they were a small channel, who are very hands on, are strictly only doing 20 minute odd videos, so they'll fit a couple of bits, go to a garage to fit some tyres, then say they've "run out of time" and it will be in the next video. They used to do some cracking long interesting videos tearing down or rebuilding a car. They're still humble and genuinely nice guys, but I fear their channel will go the wrong way. Especially with the new shop they're about to start.
Harry has a varied and interesting collection, gives honest reviews on modern cars, doesn't rush, is knowledgeable and engaging. He doesn't need to do "look at me collecting my £££££££ financed car" to grab a headline. That to my mind, is paying to win.
Yes, I understand these channels are a business, but like any business, integrity and being unique are important. Banging out the same crap everyone else does will never last IMO.
Interestingly, Tavarish has acknowledged his failings to some extent and is going to be more hands on again in his videos, with longer content.

I can say now that my car has been reviewed by JayEmm. I can also say that he is a thoroughly nice guy and is very respectful of your car.

That was one nutty trip. The further we travelled towards the Sahara, the crazier it became. It was not a trip to consider any sort of 'what ifs' as you were basically on your own out there. If the Testerossa had decided to properly pack up, then I would have had to organise my own transportation out of the country, as the normal AA and RAC type of rescue services don't cover Morocco. Got away with that one but then it was a very memorable trip..

My only criticism of Harry's videos is there aren't enough of them!
I think it's fair to say Harry you are the only Youtuber on this thread we universally agree on

As regards the lack of vids, While I admire hugely the work ethic of Shmee, etc, who pump out a remarkable number of videos each month, I'm not interested in trying to compete on this level.
Harry's Garage is more of an excuse to revisit (or test new) interesting cars when offered to me and while I'm regularly invited on new car launches, I turn them all down as I find manufacture launches too controlled and much prefer to live with a car first and test them on roads I know well before passing any comment on them.

I’m currently on my way to Italy via Mulhouse but I’m going to change the route home next weekend to incorporate Route Napoleon as per the Countach video from a year or so ago!
I think Harry’s Garage is so popular due to the wide variety of cars you own. From Clio’s to Lamborghini via Alfa Romeo, Mercedes, Lotus, Range Rover etc. There’s something for everyone!

I quoted the views as a primitive outlook as to the video performance but over the last few weeks I've relaxed the nature of my content and the Shmee-character quite significantly, which is instantly reaping rewards.
It wasn't all that long ago that getting every video to 100k was a challenge whereas now the channel is on a run of over 60 consecutively and most of the recent videos are 200k or higher; in fact on average 1 per week over the last 5 weeks has done half a million. Not only that but the detailed information in the back end shows higher retention times, a stronger %age of US audience (which is critical for high value advertising), and July broke records for my channel which already look set to be broken again in August.
There's no guidebook or set of rules to follow when doing this but it's all a balance and ultimately I view it very much as a business and look for what is going to be the most successful. I don't intend to stoop into a world of clickbait by any stretch of the imagination and far too many hours are wasted working out how best to title each video, but you have to play the 'game' that's in front of you and I spend many hours every day in the Analytics to work out how to do that as best as possible.
When creating monthly magazines, the most discussed page was the cover. Image, cover-lines and impact. It's exactly the same with YouTube, you have one image to sell your story, so of course you put huge effort into making the video thumbnail and description work for you and hook viewers in. You make sure the content keeps them interested too, as that's how you build up loyalty and they will click again when you post a new video..It wasn't all that long ago that getting every video to 100k was a challenge whereas now the channel is on a run of over 60 consecutively and most of the recent videos are 200k or higher; in fact on average 1 per week over the last 5 weeks has done half a million. Interesting; the cars I own need to interest me and offer a different drive experience to anything else in the garage. Whether they generate any extra views is immaterial and never considered. Then I look at cars like Senna/Pista/F12TDF etc and wonder do they actually offer any more 'bang for buck' than cars that are considerably cheaper? It used to be you bought cars to give you pleasure, not a return on your 'investment' and I think the tide is turning on this because there are simply too many specials being launched for the today's car enthusiast market to absorb.
I have bikes as well as cars in my collection and my ultimate 'Dakar' bike is probably my Cagiva Elefant 900ie. It was a limited run (1000) replica of the 1990 Dakar winning bike and cost me £7000. I rode it across a bit of the Sahara desert for my sixtieth birthday last year and you simply can't put a price on that. In terms of bang-for-buck it's off the scale.
In the car world, the latest crop of limited run supercars get replaced far too quickly and I'm not sure they offer great value over something like a Ferrari F40/F50 or Carrera GT. They're newer and more powerful but are they actually better/more enjoyable too? Hmm. Look what Alpine has done in the sportscar marketplace, then consider something similar in the supercar arena..
