Are these Vloggers just a scam? SOL or Shmee etc? (Vol 2)

I have thought this a number of times too. I couldn't believe it when Shmee got one as it's totally different to the rest of his cars and judging by the number of times it's featured in his videos since he got it, I assume no-one else is particularly interested in it either. He said something about not expecting the G63 to come so soon but it was still a mighty odd choice of car although it did contribute to the multi-coloured garage.Edited by The Li-ion King on Thursday 22 August 05:03
I think this thread has met a rocky "modern day society" where anyone can swing opinion.
PH is part of that modern day society so I am rather surprised people want to live in the old days.
In the old days your would have to write a letter to the Times
Am I saying it is good? No, it is just modern day society.
No point getting outraged whilst doing nothing and sucking it up.
We need a 21st union of viewers where we decide what is right and what is wrong. It's history moved to the 21st C.
Any how enough keyboard presses I need to check out what More More More More Doug Demerara sugaring up his bank balancehas in the last 20s .
20th Century
"Chewing gum for the eyes"
21st Century
"Chewing gum for the eyes and a rather sticky keyboard due to late night watching with a takeaway"
Does that say more about them or us?

I wonder if we’re missing the point here
I would never rely on an influencer review to buy a £200k car. I’d go for a proper journalist review
But I don’t think many influencers are selling a technical review of a car. They’re offering a glimpse into lifestyle-how the car might be used. And presumably that’s worth as much to a manufacturer as a review?
When I watch many car adverts on TV they do exactly the same thing -“hey you can go surfing in this new Renault”. They don’t tell me it’s got a
Limited slip differential.
So STG driving a car down to Monaco is probably perfect for BMW/AUDI etc isn’t it?

2019 .. person who wanted to sell you something is an influencer
The issue here is not the salesman or influencer but actually the ability of desire to be pandered by the easy way to scratch that desire in 2019. Even if you shouldn't really.
I get the feeling our grandparents in the war took the pain and in August 2019 their subsequent 2nd generation is just living the luxury.
If any world wide global problem happens now I don't think we can cope with it as before.
The human world is getting lazy. In August 22nd 2019 you can even order your takeaway to be delivered to your door.

So you have to use your legs less.
In 2024 Feedmymouth.com will be supplying unhealthy foods so you don't have to even get out of the chair.

That's because the ASA don't let them mention anything about the performance or having fun driving, so that's why TV ads just show lifestyle shots and people enjoying the quality of the stereo etc. When I watch many car adverts on TV they do exactly the same thing -“hey you can go surfing in this new Renault”. On which note, I wonder if in the near future social media personalities will have to abide by the same rules if they are being paid to promote a vehicle....

Manufacturers and car dealers must see that it works well enough to convince those who can be tempted? Modern equivalent of the bedroom poster I suppose.
But how many of us went on to buy a Porsche 959 or Ferrari F40 30 years later? Even for those who did, what direct benefit did that have to the manufacturer?I've seen first-hand that using social media as a marketing strategy is short-sighted. I used to do a lot of work for an automotive company that sold luxury/high-end cars. When I started, they were shifting around 3-4 a month. With decent imagery and a proper marketing campaign, that number went to over 40/month. As soon as the influencer hype started, the CEO realised that he didn't need to continue paying £5k for ad placements in mags like Top Gear because he could just post them on to a free app. The whole marketing ethos of the company shifted to social media. Our budgets for shoots dropped because they would only ever end up on Instagram so they were disposable and within a week nobody would ever see them again. I moved on and the last I heard, the companies instagrams and youtube channels are all doing well, but they are selling 2 cars a month and most of the staff are now on short weeks.
The problem with relying on these things is you're only ever an algorythm-change away from being forgotten. Facebook got greedy and now their business section is dead in the water. Instagram have followed suit.
Is it *really* that different to how it has ever been? Sure the technology has changed, and maybe the nature of the people, but makers of all kinds of products have always used the lure of the people vs the lure of the product.
How many lust after a Mustang because of Bullitt?
The Countach is well regarded as an awful car to drive but that doesn't stop us all wanting one - I'm sure the Cannonball Run etc... influenced that.
If the youth of today see Shmee the same way a previous generation did Steve McQueen (an extreme example but you get what I mean), you can't blame them - especially as pointed out in light of ludicrous restrictions on traditional advertising.
What's particularly interesting about the current generation is the accessibility of foreign content. I can't remember seeing American car mags on the shelves of WHSmith as a kid
