In Shmee's defence, he has access to the Youtube analytics for the video that tell him things like viewer retention and cumulative view time, plus the experience to correlate those to an Adsense paycheque.

You're not wrong to question whether a given approach is correct or sustainable, but there's a lot of variables involved in making that call.

If Tim wants to say here that a video is doing really well by the numbers that don't matter when in reality it's taking a big hit by the numbers that do, that's up to him. It doesn't affect the rest of us, but nor do we have access to the data to run our own analysis on it.

I quoted the views as a primitive outlook as to the video performance but over the last few weeks I've relaxed the nature of my content and the Shmee-character quite significantly, which is instantly reaping rewards.

It wasn't all that long ago that getting every video to 100k was a challenge whereas now the channel is on a run of over 60 consecutively and most of the recent videos are 200k or higher; in fact on average 1 per week over the last 5 weeks has done half a million. Not only that but the detailed information in the back end shows higher retention times, a stronger %age of US audience (which is critical for high value advertising), and July broke records for my channel which already look set to be broken again in August.

There's no guidebook or set of rules to follow when doing this but it's all a balance and ultimately I view it very much as a business and look for what is going to be the most successful. I don't intend to stoop into a world of clickbait by any stretch of the imagination and far too many hours are wasted working out how best to title each video, but you have to play the 'game' that's in front of you and I spend many hours every day in the Analytics to work out how to do that as best as possible.

Last Shmee video with less than 100k views was 6th June - seriously impressive!

Shmee, In your latest video did you purposely quote Jake Paul? I was showing a mate of mine your latest video of getting stopped again in the GT, my mates son was in the room and got very excited upon hearing you say 'it's everyday bro'

Yes, it was an inside joke we were making about how bad the GT's fuel situation is; combination of poor economy and tiny fuel tank.

WRT views, I assume Youtube(rs) can distinguish between those who have clicked and viewed only 30 secs and left vs those who have viewed the video in its entirety.

I assume the latter more desirable because of the option of having ads spread through the video itself (multiple ads viewed = increased revenue)? Is there any other benefit in keeping people viewing until the end?

Do YouTubers get more money if a user actually clicks an ad as well?

Most important question: Has anyone ever met someone in real life wearing a Vincero watch?

Shmee, first off, due respect to you for the hardwork you put into your channel. I know it's so easy for us to criticise your work but you show a lot of maturity dealing with the negative criticisms and having watched your channel grow over the years, i can only say that the sky is the limit for you because you're always one step ahead of the game! What's happening with your plans in Germany? Are you still moving there and doing things around the Nurburgring? Also, great to see you're a fan of Harry's Channel also. What would you say are the top 5 YouTube channels you follow or 10 if you watch that much?

I can say now that my car has been reviewed by JayEmm. I can also say that he is a thoroughly nice guy and is very respectful of your car.

Well said. As much as I can only watch some of his videos including muting my laptop at the first 10secs Uber cringe ‘hi guys I’m shmee’, fair play for the amount of hard work and way in which you deal with most of the criticism (barring schmmmmarks slur recently)

Absolutely, well done Tim/Shmee

There’s a revolution going on with regard to tv viewing and clearly it is evolving at a rapid pace

Certainly the last couple of years had seen a massive change in the viewing habits in our house ( as in many I’d imagine)

Keep up the good work and keep ahead of the game

My favourite Harry video is the S1 Landie one, and now I want a Harry's Farm retro episode, doing the tasks around the farm using that with PTO attachments.
Sorry to report Series one at the menders at the moment. Each drum brake stopped working, one by one, which wasn't too bad as we only use it around the farm now. But when the only one working was the near-side rear and even then only probably at 50%, I decided to get it fixed..

Right I've watched a few of Harry's vids now, really enjoying the farming ones, the more modern car based ones and the road trips, the classics don't really do much for me but I can see why people like Harry and his videos

He's gained at least 1 extra subscriber today

Maybe slightly off topic but considering the amount of stuff I watch on YouTube (can watch hours a day vs. never turning the TV on), I am considering getting the Premium offering. I understand this not only removes ads but offers an increased rate for content creators too.

Is this something you can track in your statistics? If so, what sort of percentages are any of you seeing? With YouTube being free for so long, I can't imagine the percentages are very high.

My channel is tiny compared to Shmee's (it's not car based) but here's my income breakdown between non-premium and premium viewers.

I took up a trial of YT premium a few months back and cancelled it after 2 weeks or so, as it was aggressively pushing all the YT premium exclusive stuff that I had no interest in.

My recommendations page was just full of content I had no interest in and didn’t appear to behave the way it did previously, every ‘next video’ was some scripted content from one of the big creators. Not my thing so cancelled the trail and back to my 200+ subs of content I actually enjoy.

Thanks for kind comments and we're all getting older, it's a fact of life!

It's fun doing vids on a completely different subject to cars too, might get a little tougher to keep the pace of new vids appearing during the winter months but let's see.

Thanks again for the support. H
Superb videos Harry, the complete antithesis of all the other tripe on YouTube. Please just keep doing what you're doing, quality over quantity every time smile
