RE: Shed of the Week: Range Rover
Discussion
I've had a 2.5 DHSE and a 4.6.
2.5 felt underpowered but still managed to pull along once it got there.
4.6 drank fuel for a laugh but was surprisingly nippy.
One of mine had coil springs, the other had the air suspension, which was forever adjusting itself in traffic.
A lot of metal for the money, but I'd be inclined to spend a bit more and get a better example in a nicer colour.

I have had dealings with 3 of these over the years .
1, Recovered from Paris as an insurance job after an attempted theft left it immobilised , it had been converted to a Mitsubishi diesel engine and nobody was willing or able to get it going , it finally caught fire at an auto electricians .
2 A diesel one with cracked heads , the heads were sent away to be resin repaired , it was glacier slow .
3 A 4.6 petrol that we rebuilt the engine on , 280 bhp gave an improvement in performance but it rarely made double figure MPG.
All of them never had fully functional electronic components.

Ah the P38. The RR everyone (who haven't owned/driven one) like to knock.
I have owned mine fro 10 years and around 80,000 miles. It's a 4.6 with LPG. does around 14-16 on LPG so that is an aprroximate equivalent high 20's on petrol. Does help that it is the later Thor set up. Very little has gone wrong. discs/pads last about 45K, 1 set of air bags, one set of shox. Tyres seem to last forever, about 60K at the last look.
The transmission had to be rebuilt - but that wasn't helped by the GF chucking it into reverse while going forward (and writing off the Vectra behind).
Heater blend motors - which can be replaced easily if you know how. Otherwise usual stuff of a couple iof batteries and an alternator.
I've towed with it regularly, including trailer + fork lift a couple of times. don't ask about GVW on those occasions! It is always a delight to drive. It is getting a bit shonky around the edges, saggy headlining etc. It cost about £4500 to buy 10 years ago, so I think I would rather spend a few grand on it rather than braving L322 ownership.

"Everybody can relax i've found the car. It needs some suspension work and shocks, brakes, brake pads, lining, steering box, transmission, rear end, Only 4800, maybe new rings also mufflers and some wiring"
A true story in defence of the P38
On March 2nd this year, my son and I travelled from the Midlands to Tenby to get some photos of the snow. We had to drive through the "red warning" area in South Wales. We were on winter tyres, so we didn't have any issues. On the way home, things got rather more "challenging - even on the M4, M50, M5, we didn't see tarmac for well over 120 miles.
Just as we were about the join the M5 from the M50, we saw a 4x4 travelling very slowly in the opposite direction with its hazards on, with an articulated truck right behind it. My son and I instantly assumed it was a modern 4x4 on cheap summer tyres which had bitten off more than it could chew. As we got closer, we could see it was a P38 Rangie and it was towing the articulated truck up the gentle hill away from the M5
Epic

You did a 300 mile round trip during a red weather warning so you could take some photos of snow. What an idiot. Why am I an idiot? Did I get stuck? Did I need to call out the emergency services? Did I cause any problems for anyone else? Do you have ANY idea how prepared I was just in case I did get stuck? Have you ANY idea how good modern winter tyres are in snow? Is it actually any of your business what I do with my spare time, regardless of the weather?Google "Thumperian principle"....
And it was 450 miles and definitely worth it

Yes you are an idiot and if you need to ask why then you are an even bigger idiot. Google "Thumperian principle"....

My old man had a P38 new on a P registration. Had it 10 years and about 79,000 miles and it was faultless. Sold to a trader in absolutely spotless condition, chap decided to keep it to himself to tow his RIB. Four weeks later as the poor chap backed his RIB into the water, the car went up in flames! He sent us pics asking for the original advert pics so he could argue with his insurance company ref the value and what good condition it was in.
Cool story bro and all that.

Why are so many Brits so scared of a few inches of snow? The fact that we had zero issues and the journey took only half an hour longer than normal just shows how weather warnings are dumbed down to the lowest common denominator to cope with people that have neither the skill or equipment to drive in anything more than a light covering of snow.Don't measure me by your inabilities
