Yes, and they still do it today - e.g. on a Clio Mk3: to change the front struts (shock absorbers) you first have to remove the windscreen wipers great to drive, nightmare to fix due to over-complicated ways of mounting even the simplest parts.
I think the 4 and 5 had similar issues, but I don't have specific examples.
