Most of the people described here don’t have the intelligence to know that a car is rather heavy and if not secured properly will fall on you and more than likely kill you
If we were to judge everyone by your own lack of knowledge and ability then no one should be allowed to operate a microwave oven.

You may joke, but wasn't this being proposed as a law?

Gas Safe, Part P, etc etc.

The authorities like creating certifications and charging a lot of money for tradesmen to hold them, and that's just sparkies and plumbers, i'm sure the vehicle dealerships would love to have a monopoly on repairs and servicing....

All it would take is for a CEO to play a few rounds of golf with the right people and suddenly you'll need a £5000 qualification to work on your own car without voiding your insurance and part of that will involve apprenticing for a period of time, making it impossible for anyone who works a full time job.

Not seriously, no.

Nearest in recent years has been an industry body, the IMI, calling for pros to need to be on the IMI's register. No restriction on DIY.

As for Gas Safe - it's legal to work on your own gas...

Nothing to stop you, but your home insurance company would be able to duck out of any claim and you'd have trouble selling a house without the boiler installation being signed off.

I've been trying to get a new boiler installed, but because it's an awkward installation (roof top flue and needs a condensate pump routing through house), nobody seems to want to do it, everyone just wants simple installations, so I considered doing Gas Safe (as it would just about be cheaper than paying someone to do the job), but the apprenticing requirement makes it impossible.

So? He has two jacks sharing the weight of half of a ford Puma, well within their limits.

I thought the Twitter user tweeting about not alerting health and safety authorities was relevant to the thread. And current.

I also thought the Metro was topical with the SoTW discussion.

I thought the Puma and Metro were both of PH interest. I've not driven a Puma but the K Series engined Metro I drove wasn't bad.

Lack of knowledge?
I have been in the motor trade for over 45 years and probably forgotten more than you will ever know.
The posts on here about the way people are going about trying to repair a vehicle bear out what I have said.
A car is a very dangerous thing and if not repaired correctly can kill.
Why is it that most men need to feel they are experts when it comes to cars.
You very rarely hear anyone going on about repairing there cooker tv etc.
I remember a guy in his mid 40’s many years ago bringing his XJ6 in complaining of a noise on his brakes he said proudly he new all about cars and had just fitted new pads, he had fitted them the wrong way round.

Nearly had my head bashed in with the bonnet on the old Jag today.

They look better but front hinged bonnets can be deadly when the struts are worn.

Sounds like something from a Mr Bean movie.

Only needs one for it to become very unstable.

I love it when tradespeople get very protective of the humble DIY'er.

Did you know you don't need to be certified to install a central heating boiler? Just competent and have the equipment to do the installation tests? No gas tech will ever admit that.

There are people on here that do stuff at home that makes the bulk of the motor trade look like rank amateurs, go and have a look in readers rides at the expertise in building stuff.

I know cars are dangerous, as o many others on here, pages of advice on the dangers of jacking cars.

I do not consider myself an expert but have built engines an maintained my own cars for 30 years, and I do that due to my overall disappointment with the motor trade in the main.

I am in my mid 40s and all my brake pads are the right way round, its not hard, not sure how anyone could get them the wrong way round.

Agreed. Literally anything a mechanic can do, anyone can do with the help of a youtube video or forum for advice if required. All it comes down to is bolting and unbolting components. It only requires a mechanic when specialist machinery is required to get the job done.
