That's a real labour of love. thumbup

I had a D-plate 16V as a stop-gap car for about 6 months back in 1987. Sadly it hadn't been looked after very well - I think I was the 10th owner! But it drove like a go-cart - great fun.

If it had been a better example I might have kept it.

Mum had a none gti B reg mk2 Golf years ago when I was a yoof. I remember thinking how solid it felt at the time. No power steering either I recall.

Keep up the good work.
I had an oak green 16V Special (celebrating 10 million Golfs) from new for many years which also didn’t have power steering. Oh how we laughed as I couldn’t even turn the steering wheel to drive out of the dealers who had just fitted lower profile tyres on a new set of larger Momo alloys!

Good choice. I had one of these about 10 years ago. The early Mk2s really stand out from the later cars, both in terms of style and rarity. What's the interior like on yours?
Had Mk1 and 2 and Jetta in the day. Daughter had Polo now referred to as breadvan. Did you ever see a bread van that looked like a polo? They drove well by contemporary standards but rusted round the petrol filler and wheel arches, made to appear ok by cladding, and oil from ill fitting cam cover dripped straight into alternator. The seat bolsters even at middle age looked like they had been scavenged by rats. They were better than some others at the time, though brakes were feeble as a result of cheap RHD conversion . They were also expensive compared with rivals.

I have a feeling I've followed you round Combe

If not, was a very similar car

Mk2 golfs are really growing on me. Big bumper, small bumper, they all look great. I have no doubt the GTI's will become very collectable quite shortly.
My wife just purchased a mk2 country syncro. Not as cool as a GTI but really practical and a bit quirky. We bought it very cheap with an engine fault, I'm pretty sure it's the fuel pump also. Picking up some parts for it while we are holidaying in the UK at the moment. Can't wait to get it cleaned up and back on the road.
They are perfect everyday classics.

Great resto, looks fab in Atlas grey with the steelies. Bet there's hardly any Mk2 8vs in that combination left! Love the mk7 too, if only they did a metallic version of that colour.
Been thinking of changing the wife's mk6 for a mk7 but can't justify the cost at the moment and would be torn between the GTi and the R. There's just something special about fast Golfs, they're always more than the sum of their parts!

Remember picking a new one up in 88, a black one I won in a newspaper competition, same spec, they look so good on the steels and unmodified, love well modded ones but nice to se the odd standard example without big bumpers, lowering or alloys.

Was a thing of wonder back then after a 1969 Capri, 112 bhp seems like nothing these days but I bet they still feel decently quick.

You probably did....Its my second home.

I go there every year Ford days, VAG / Autometrix days all sorts.

Goes well on Dunlop Direzza's

Will be out again end of month.

I've got a Stage 2 APR MK7R 3 door in Oryx running about 410/440lbs DSG. I've just fitted a proper 2 piece Tarox 8 pot BBK. Goes well as my daily and looks good together with my valver.

Well done winning one OP. thumbup

But with 112 bhp yours must have been an 8-valve.

IIRC 16V MK2 GTis had 137bhp - but by the time I got one I'd already had two 2.8 Injection Capris with 160 bhp (and RWD)!

Mind you it was still loads of fun. smile

Lovely mk2, congratulations! smile There's something still so right about that shape, especially a nice early one like this.

Re the mk7 colour, I love it. We have a MINI Clubman in Pure Aubergine, which isn't a million miles away. Also changes shade significantly depending on the light. Dealer reckoned it was a bit of a Marmite colour though.

Well that was an expensive read!

Had 2 of these in the past and now a third is on the way!!

Was supposed to be buying a practical run about that’s more suited to a dog than the cheap to run daily Aygo.

Now have a 29 year old MK2 16v on the way!!

I cannot be held responsible for any MK2 Golf purchases that are a result of my ham fisted writing.

But congrats!

Haha! Just popped on a popular car buying site after reading this and just went for a look at a Helios Blue early big bumper and found myself saying I’ll take it!

Many miles and owners but full service history and very original, but not too nice to use.

So thanks really I guess! Goes surprisingly well to for a 30 year old car.

Indeed they do go well! Shows just how much weight effects everything. Also surprisingly useable on a long journey or commute
