To me that looks like a 85 not a 86
Isn't the 85 the 1.5 engine? This has the 4age 1.6My mate has a trueno in white for the full Initial D effect (eurobeat intensifies).
It's nice listening to it burst into life every day leaving work, his is an import and came with a kakimoto exhaust...
Cool cars.
Its one of the most fun cars I've driven. Its hardly fast as standard and is very basic but so easy to powerslide out of corners and generally feels playful. Mine has a plate diff and its a joy to drive down the lanes. I imported mine and was as near to standard as I could get. I doubt you could get the same car for less than £8k now.
They are rather easy to modify too with hundreds of parts available. I have a supercharger to solve the bhp issue

Great cars
A lot of these got hoovered up from the mainland and taken over to Ireland in the early to mid 90s by groups of Irish lads.
They used to come over at weekends, get the Midland and NorthWest Autotraders and seek out all the old rwd stuff like Escorts, Mantas, Asconas, old E21/E30s, Corollas and Carltons - all the stuff that had fallen out of favour and was available for sub 2k
They'd turn up with cash and would pretty much buy anything with a bundle of cash as long as it would make the drive back to Anglesey. Used to see a little string of old rwd stuff heading up the A5 on a Saturday or Sunday, off to Ireland. My Manta was sold like that, no quibble over price and just a cursory glance over the car. Friend had a C-reg Corolla and that was bought similarly
Always quite lively over the bumps as standard - nearly bought one in the late 80s but a great test in a Manta GTE swayed me to an Opel - they were often group test rivals in mags of the time.
At one time you could get the same engine in a front engined rwd hatch, a front engined fwd hatch and a mid engined rwd sports car - all available at a similar price new as well in the 80s
Not a common occurrence!

dont think I have seen a MK2 Escort go in straight line in a video in years.
True. And yet, in the 80s, none of our neighbours' (there were loads of them, being about 10 miles from the factory) or my uncle's Mk2s ever went past our house sideways...Edited by MC Bodge on Tuesday 17th April 19:08

I like the AE86 a lot, but a standard one doesn’t massively interest me. These need to be modified to be the legendary car everyone thinks they are. Fortunately choice of mods for them goes from basics through to outright batst mental!
Something like this
I agree, much like MK1/2 Escorts , the ones everyone love that handle amazingly well, have screaming engines and wide arches have about 1% original Escort in them and I believe the AE86 can be largely the same, a bog standard one isn't really a racing car minus some stickers. Something like this
That said, wide arches, sticky tyres, a Toyota BEAMS engine, LSD and i'm in. However Id want all that for £10k not the one in the advert.

Isn't that because they're just as fast whilst going sideways, hence their fun factor / appeal?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vy8w915Z1Wc

I like them but definitely a rose tinted spectacle car IMO. Was going to buy one in the late 80s but after a test drive was thoroughly underwhelmed . Most of the time it's not really practical to drive a car sideways which was pretty much this cars selling point. I like the looks and the old Toyota interior has a certain charm , the engine is sweet and revvy but was slow even then.
It's as fast as you'd expect for 122bhp in a car of that weight though really. Not slower, nor faster.....i'd have one in a heartbeat,
but then again it would replace a v6 Omega which is similar albeit about twice the weight.
you usually find a person only owns a AE86 for a short time,
at least until they appear in court

Had one before. My favourite car, I knew what every wire on the wiring loom did just from the colour, such is how compelling they can get.
I ended up supercharging mine and then sold to someone in Ireland never to be seen again. They are quite slow as standard but a hell of a lot of fun. I'd have a warehouse full of them if time and funds allowed as they are very customisable.

As another person said, the difference between the 85 and 86 is the engine. The "Initial D" 86 is the Corolla Trueno, with the pop up lights. This is the Corolla Levin. I think you can get an AE85 or AE86 version of either, but obviously no-one wants the 85...Xaero said:

Some moons ago, over on the Evo Forum, someone picked-up a UK Corolla GT (pretty much what this is but without the smell of fags and miso) and proceeded to ruin it rather badly.
He thought it was the Initial D Drift Missile and so he threw away the interior, threw in a load of "because racecar" and took it to a track where it was - erm - not that fast and not that much fun (amusingly, he had a Retro car magazine along to document his disappointment)
He'd missed the point because it's a ROAD CAR and they can be really good fun in that seting BUT they are nowhere-near fast enough (unless you throw mega money into a built engine with ITBs and even then) to make good track cars - and they do not drift like the cartoony man does ;0
I LOVE cars of this generation - the interiors, the exteriors, the fact they're not electronic timebombs - but prices, thanks to that ropey-old-Anime, are very, very silly indeed.

So do I - why oh why did I sell this in 1984 (well because I wanted a Capri 2.8i of course)! Edited by 406dogvan on Wednesday 18th April 01:05

Personally I’d like one lowered with some suitably period JDM wheels, can’t decide which but probably RS Watanabe’s, TRD N2 kit and a Honda S2000 engine and gearbox.

There are plenty of Toyota options, from 160 hp (4AGE Blacktop or Supercharged) on up.

Simply because the Honda F20C is awesome and comes attached to one of THE best manual gearboxes ever made. And stupid power doesn’t even require opening up the engine to achieve it just add the forced induction of choice and supporting mods - 450-500bhp with not a huge amount of effort. There are plenty of Toyota options, from 160 hp (4AGE Blacktop or Supercharged) on up.
