1,000hp drift Auris!

That madman Frederic Aasbo is back, and would you just look at his new set of wheels?

You'll hopefully excuse the omission of the new Toyota Auris in PH's Geneva show coverage. Worthy though it is, and significant for boasting Toyota's latest TNGA platform, it wasn't a key PistonHeads launch. However, when a new Auris with 1,000hp has been created...

That's exactly what's happened in America, where Frederic Aasbo - yes, he from the GT86 Milbrook madness - and his Formula Drift Team have made a new sideways weapon based on the latest Auris. Sure, it's a Corolla over there, and of course it shares next to nothing with the road, but we think it looks cool. And anything with more than 1,000hp should be of interest, whatever it's based on.

Aasbo's car uses a 2.7-litre Toyota 2AR engine with a Borg Warner turbo and nitrous to make its ludicrous power, reaching the ground via a Gforce four-speed dog box. The widebody kit has been designed by Jonsibal, and those Motegi wheels are nine-inch wide at the front and 10-inch at the back.

All well and good, you might be thinking: drift car has lots of power and silly wheels. However, there's something more important to this new Auris, because it has won on its debut. Yep, Aasbo and his Auris took Formula Drift spoils at the Long Beach 2018 season opener. Given how competitive the series is, and the inevitable complications of developing a brand new car, that's quite some achievement. Moreover, when there's a video from Rockstar celebrating the fact, we had to share it. While some are still a bit snooty about drifting, this does look tremendously good fun. Can we have a go? Please?

I don't know much about drifting but is it not beneficial to have a longer wheelbase?
