RE: Lamborghini Urus: Driven
Discussion
Isn’t the whole point of Lamborghini to produce cars that make small boys stop and stare? Doesn’t matter if its 30 years old or 3, Lambos look great.
This looks like, well, nothing. It’s not ugly (ugly can be good, see Alfa SZ), it’s not beautiful. It’s not outrageous, it’s not elegant. Take the badge off and it could be anything. It could easily be a Porsche, it could be a Nissan. Meh.
They’ve obviously run the numbers and it will sell like hot cakes, but I do wonder why.

This is seriously going to impact G63 and G65 AMG sales.....
Gotta admit though, you can't blame the VAG group for doing something like this. If people are ready to pay, you've gotta be ready to take their money.....
I will continue buying G's, but would not buy this plasticky VAG thing.Gotta admit though, you can't blame the VAG group for doing something like this. If people are ready to pay, you've gotta be ready to take their money.....
Plus, the G is not an SUV
To say it'll sell like hot cakes is something of an exageration to say the least.
In the UK the market for 600BHP £160,000 SUVs is miniscule.
Yes, the odd footballer will have one, and some will trawl Knightsbridge and be parked outside the Dorchester but if they sell 500 in a year I'd be very surprised.
So if you see one it will be a very rare car indeed.
Just had a google and lambo expect to sell 350 a year in the UK. So you'll not see many for sure.

Yep - I’m also in the ‘know I shouldn’t if I’m to have any PH credibility, but I like it’ camp.
Whilst this will be likely bought as a compliment to a Lambo sports/supercar purchase, I still think that I would still choose an RRS SVR as my daily. That being said, if Lambo Edinburgh wanted to do me a deal on a Peformante and a Urus...

I simply don't buy into "lamborghini need to make this so they can keep selling supercars".
A quick Google shows that even in 2009 at the start of the recession sales were down, but still making profit. Another article stated 2016 was a record breaking year for sales and turnover, with profit growing for the 6th year in a row.
I simply think this is VAG trying to eek out as much money from each platform and each brand it owns. With no real thought about the provenance of each brand. Which, I suppose, is exactly what a company like VAG is supposed to do. Lamborghini, to me though, was always about being the more dramatic alternative to Ferrari and it worked for a long time.
When I see a Porsche Cayenne I see an Audi. The same will happen when I see this. It is not a lamborghini to me.
Oh look, yet another person who'll *never* be in a position to buy one going on about how its not a good idea. Lambo doesn't care what you think. They care what current Lambo owners think and as a group we've spoken... we want this car to be a thing.
My point is that I see it as a cynical product and retains none of the ingredients of a Lamborghini in my personal opinion. Also that I don't believe Lamborghini need to make it, as is often suggested when a previous manufacturer of sports cars begins making badge engineered SUV.
Whether Lamborghini cares what I think or not is moot.

You forgot the G63 AMG too
I've always freely admitted the Bentayga is a) hideous and b) dull, and it will definitely be going (having shed a predictably hideous amount of cash) when the Urus arrives. I've specced it in the same green as in the pics accompanying this story (which is officially called Verde Hebe...perfect for that road trip to Tel Aviv) and I think it does have a certain brutal charm though I'm not a fan of the painted strakes at either side on the front which resemble BBQ forks. I also find it good fun when car makers make such enormous and relatively tall vehicles go insanely fast.
Finally, in answer to your last question funnily enough HR Owen emailed me yesterday asking if I'd be interested in a Cullinan. Deliveries apparently start in Jan 2019. I'm potentially interested but need to see a few more details because there's not a lot out there right now. Whatever it looks and goes like one thing I'm certain of is that it won't be winning any PH popularity contests!

Will look forward to reading your reports on it.
