I hated the gearbox on my mk2 Sport, all clickety-clack. I bought a new Swift and the feel of the gearbox seemed much better at first, well-damped and quiet. Now I've done 2500m it's the same as the old one: noisy and feels cheap to use. I suspect they are using the same gearboxes, they've just found a way to damp them temporarily so they seem better during test drives.

This is primarily from the rubber bushes that the gear lever assembly is mounted on, there is so much slack that the entire assembly moves around by maybe 5mm each time you change gear, making it feel awful. Aftermarket bushes are made specifically to fix this and they are pretty simple to fit, though I used a selection of O-rings to create a solution.

The balljoint that the gearlever pivots on also has some slop, but this can be removed by shimming it with a strip of thin metal e.g. a cut up a coke can. The difference in mine after fixing the bushes and the balljoint was huge, feels lovely now (though not quite as good as my previous CTR).

I see you can buy a short shifter for the mk2 swift sport do you know if any good ?

Not tried one myself though there have been positive reports on the SSOC. Sorting out the bushes etc. would become even more important as a quick shifter would amplify any slop even more than the standard one.
