I wasn't driving too closely in the lead up but when someone unexpectedly slams on their brakes much harder and longer than you thought they were going to you tend to get near the back of them. Personally think it was decent driving to react quick enough and to have left enough of my performance margin spare to avoid an incident and not trouble any other road users.
The police driver I had in my passenger seat was surprised by the bikers actions considering his riding up to that point and didn't have any comments on my driving but hey you guys know best.
given the oft mentioned braking performance cars have over bikes i think you clearly made a mistake in this instance. unless you didn't make best use of your brakes ? i agree cars have a braking performance advantage, i do however think despite abs making it largely idiot proof, there are many car drivers that can't use their brakes to maximum effect. same applies to bikes, i know it is a particular deficiency of mine in both bike and car.

New depths being plumbed here... Nearly running into the back of other road users and thinking you've done nothing wrong but in fact drove very well to avoid the crash you nearly created... LOL

You wouldn't last one weekend on a bike with that mindset.

Having spent all day Saturday being trained and out riding with the met police, I find his reaction odd. Everything they taught us was about looking ahead and reading what may or may not happen.
If you need your “god like reactions “ to save the day, both your and your police friends observation skills are clearly lacking.
Yes, you'd think he'd have left more room, seems obvious, that obvious thing.

Well you are a cheery bunch today.
I had been behind the guy for miles with no reason to think he would do anything stupid, he had been riding quite enthusiastically, very much not scared of the throttle and leaning and hanging off the bike around the longer sweepers.
I was a sensible safe distance behind the whole time, then we came to a proper corner. Considering his prior performance I was expecting him either just going in as he was or a slight lift and I was planning to follow him in at that speed but he hit the brakes hard and obviously reacting to that I lost a chunk of my safe gap, this is the exact reason I had left a gap, you know just in case. Had I not left the sensible gap or reacted quickly then I probably would have hit him. I genuinely can't see what you guys are having a problem with here?

Just to add, car has massively uprated brakes and very good tyres, no ABS though. Also as convenient as it may seem I did have a police driver with me, he is one of my best friends but we do give eachother stick if we do something stupid so he would have said if I was being a cock.

You were behind him for that long and didn’t overtake or lose any distance at all on the road.

Yeah we were in normal nsl A road traffic for a fair distance, He was working his way up the queue which is how he ended up in front of me. He then stayed between me and my friend in his Skyline that I was following, maybe he wanted to play with that when we had a chance. Things picked up a bit when we got off the main road and then he did his excessive brake. I don’t know what bike it was but straight line he was only pulling a car length or so over me (500bhp Impreza) so no huge dropping back / reeling him in to give any prior that he would do what he did.

I tend not to play much in my 2.0 Audi (A4) as I usually have the dog in the boot and she gets sick if it’s too rough.

So you were racing him by your own admission.

That's not really what he says though, is it?

Was he trying to overtake the bike? If not, he wasn't really racing, he was just driving a little bit slower than the bike, behind him.

The point you're trying to make may be valid, but you can't just make up 'facts' like that to support it. He didn't 'admit' to anything.
He might not admit it explicitly but it’s lretty bloody obvious what he’s inferring with “things picking up a bit”, “having a play” and then “nearly running into the back of him.”

If he wasn’t doing that then why did they stick together “for miles”. Even in my car it’s rare that I’ll be stuck behind the same car for miles ditto the car behind me.

I bought a street triple last week, loving the bike. There's no way I can ride it quicker than I drive my cars, but it's great fun. I'm getting more confidence with it though and it feels more rewarding with the effort required to steer it.

Best bit is I can go out at any time of the day and enjoy the roads, because traffic doesn't seem to matter so much, overtaking is really easy on a bike. Great visibility and reduced size allows you to just slip past.

Don't think it's quicker than the GTR or Westfield and I need a fairing because I'm getting blown about a bit!

Christ you guys will grasp at anything.
No we were not racing. I was just keeping up with the traffic in front of me.
If I was racing then everyone else in the thread here talking about their experiences also was, at least I wasn’t one of the lot offering to meet up and compare speeds.
We were on the same bit of road for so long as me and my mates were out together on our way to a location popular for people to drive out to for lunch at the weekend, the biker just happened to be going to the same place.

I thought bikes couldn’t brake or go around corners as well as cars can - 4 contact patches vs 2 and all that? Sounds like your policeman friend was too terrified to say anything.

Did he look like this guy?

Quite the opposite, I think the majority are agreeing at the moment.

He's not a target. It just sounds suspiciously like he did something stupid.

This

I’m sure if a someone came on here complaining about a bike nearly going into the back of them then we’d be having a pop at the rider for his incompetence.

You might be right but unless any of us were there we will never know.

For me the most curious part is Plod in the passenger seat when I guess the speeds were, let's say, interesting smile

That was my thought also.
I would like to get plod in my passenger seat and see what he has to say for himself, provided I get immunity
