So what is this 'old and small' car you want to buy a Mini?

Helps to understand so we can give a reasoned argument.

Are you any good at dealing with rust? hehe

A mate of mine bought one for 4k which looked fine, and ended up spending 12k on it.

Seriously get a MX5 Mk 3 instead, just as much fun, and hundreds to choose from.

Does she need your permission to buy a handbag ?
Theres quite a difference between a commitment to buy your average handbag at maybe £50-£100 and buying some old car that is going to involve ongoing significant spend and significant effort and most likely end up sucking up a lot more funds and effort than predicted.

Unless of course your wife buys handbags that cost several thousand, need £££s to £,£££s spent on them and take up a lot of spare time maintaining them each month?

Unless the O/P has a very big pot of their own money and a very understanding wife whos happy he dedicates a world of time to it, i'd avoid.

MX5 = almost all the fun, next to none of the headaches. Buy at the right price and at the right time and you can often turn a profit.

Boxster falls in to that category too. I ran a 2004 Boxster for a year. Bought for £6,750 sold for £6,850.

Pop down to your local garden centre and see if they have this kit in...

I'd agree on the Boxster. A comparable MX5 is surely just a cheaper way of moving ferrous oxide from A to B?

Jeez. Talk about the demise of man.

Just buy it. Tell her if she doesn't like it she can always walk.

I know, i'm an old romantic.

Find the one that you want. Find another one that is twice the price. Pitch the second one to your wife and keep going on and on. Finally capitulate into the compromise whereby you buy the cheaper one as a massive favour to your beautiful wife while also giving her a chunk of the cash that you’re saving to just spend as she wishes. The added bonus of this model is that when it breaks down it is her fault for not letting you buy the more expensive one.

This system allows you to buy what you want while also shifting the later backchat about it away from yourself. I find it typically costs about 25-50% of the purchase price but has always bought total peace of mind.

£5-7K on a mk3 MX5 should be relatively safe and will buy you quite a fresh one. A mk2.5, mk2 or mk1 would need well examined before purchase but there are still plenty of goods ones about. I've had half a dozen MX5s all below £3K and they've been decent enough

I'm afraid that I agree with your Doris.

I had an MGB GT V8 about 25 years ago. Even the Rover V8 didn't make up for the general crapness of the thing.

If you like your cars to be shot through with rot, then try a Fiat X1/9.

At least you can enjoy a bit of al fresco Italian brio while the metal fizzes away.

When you need to know how best to furnish that ex local authority bedsit down the line you will find all your brethren in the Lounge section. You'll just to search 'MGTOW' to find all the useful posts. wink

I'll wager half a lager shandy that you have never driven an MGB.

There can be no justification for purchasing such a contraption.

The OP clearly needs protecting from himself.

haha some great replies on here, and yeah its more of a case of things are bit tight these days so wasting some savings on an old car seems very stupid to her at this time. partly she is right it depends if the car is in good order and if a sensible price is agreed because i wont be paying his asking price anyway as i went to look at it once and it seem a little over valued for condition.
Perhaps wait until you're more financially secure?

Me, for one.

Do you buy the car that your wife tells you to buy?

Given that I'm going to drive it every day, I buy the one that I want.
Is the O/P going to be driving the MGB every day? Is it their main car? If not then its a significant financial and time investment. Whilst certainly i wouldnt be "asking permission" it would be prudent to get your life partner on board with such an investment, would it not?

I think you've hit the nail on the head there.
