My wife going on a diatribe about the relative detailed technical merits of sixties sports cars would leave me concerned she has been possessed by the spirit of a recently deceased man called Brian who enjoyed real ale, Morris dancing and greasing the underside of a Mimosa Yellow MGB called known as Gertie.
Hmm. I know what you mean. I'd better look for evidence of a beard.Mind you, asking Brian for a funding release to slake my thirst for a new motor might be an easier proposition than currently.
Will need to think this through...
Should you buy a suspiciously cheap MGB that was restored 23 years ago? No, that's probably not a good idea unless you enjoy restoring cars and the costs involved.
If it was new 23 years ago it would probably require a restoration by now.
As for discussing the idea of buying vehicles I generally go with the just buy it approach for cheaper stuff, and man maths explanation then go buy it for the expensive stuff.
I did once drop my wife off at the airport on Monday (she was working in London for the week, we live in Aberdeen) then pick her up on the Friday in a different car, having not mentioned anything about changing the car.
Very very quiet drive home (that's when I knew I was in trouble) followed by a louder discussion in the house.

i willl post some photos of the mgb but yeah we not loaded with money so restoration would be out of the question. and yeah it wasnt exactly rust free.... and put this way my grandfathers mgb in 90s was in mint condition and this one had to be restored in the mid 90s.... it says a lot of how bad it was back then. maybe i am answering my own question haha . the guy wont budge past 2k either and in my view i think its more £1500 car given it might need work. I think the main rust concern would be sills and chassis but without an expert looking at it then ut would be hard to know. he did have carpet lifted that day he very eager to tell me how good body work was constantly. My wife did say that day if it was great condition at 2k . (which would never happen at that price) she been onboard but still hated how small it was.

Coming from someone that has bought a 944 S2 cab, a mk1 Audi TT and a 350Z, perhaps you should seek her/his car buying advice. Don't let her/him get the builders in again though....jamesters said:

Pattern is fastest, most interesting for limited budget due to the fact that the universe knows when I have cash and reacts accordingly.

You are both going to end up pissed off with that I’m afraid.
If (as I’m guessing) you are fairly young I think you might be a bit shocked at just how crap old cars can be.
have you actually driven it....If (as I’m guessing) you are fairly young I think you might be a bit shocked at just how crap old cars can be.
..to see if you actually, you know.. like driving it..
I wouldn't have bought one 23 years ago, old, slow, shocking handling & ugly back then, let alone now...
seriously, drive it 20-30 miles - mixed roads (offer to pay for the petrol) to see if you actually like driving it..
if money is tight.. save up for something better... ?
it also helps if you buy a sports car that other halfs do not think they would not ever want to be seen dead in.. this car?

So in essence you've got two options OP,
1. Attempt egalitarian negotiations over many months and ultimately end up not getting it.
2. Tell her with the back of your hand like the good old days.
Best of luck whichever route you take!

I hope you are single (and probably a virgin..)
