Agree with most on here. I love my V8s and AMGs but can't really see buying this "challenging" looking beast over an V8 F Type which is basically achingly beautiful, maybe too pretty but that's where my money would and probably will go, Only hesitation is the lack of semi back seats of a 911 but then again 40k more for a 2010/2011 in turbo guise. F type is the sweet spot atm imo.

I've never liked the R231's looks for me the N/A SL63 was the better looking (& the on I'd go for) model.

Personally i think it looks really good and like this design. Seeing these in the metal, they have massive presence which isn't really considered when people just go off the looks in static pictures! The biggest issue is that the previous gen, with the round lights, was just so good looking and advanced for the time - meaning the new sl had a real hard act to follow up

Gopping.
Earlier SL55 R230 (and full AA cover) for me please.
That’s what I thought ...
Yes. If I had £40k sloshing around I'd buy the best 55 I could find, making sure it was on those rims, and have a £20k bork fund.

I love the look of a pre-facelift.
Yup - the 230 really works

OVERHANG - front and rear makes these things look absolutely ill proportioned for what should be a good looking sports car.

Might go fast as stink and make great noises and be comfortable, reliable etc but to my eyes so ugly, especially after the 2001 version got the looks and proportions so much better.
Don't the vast majority of the greatest ever car designs have massive overhangs?

Not saying this car looks amazing, but the overhangs certainly aren't the problem

Sorry but I find most mercs fairly ugly. Just been looking at new ones and the styling is bloody awful.I know they are awesome in many other ways but if i am spending big bucks I want to look at something pleasing to the eye.

I am surprised at the comments here tbh. I will agree the R230 was/is a very pretty car, and i owned an SL 55 AMG for near 5 years, but I can say with conviction that the R231 is a vastly superior car in every way, it's chalk to cheese. The 231 makes the 230 feel old, and not so well put together.
I just bought this SL63. I did always think the styling, from the front end at least was somewhat awkward, in pictures, but when i first seen one on the road my opinion changed. It has great road presence, and looks imposing and of its type.
After driving it, I couldn't imagine going back to a 230.
