If I won the lotto that’s what they would find years later - but with knackered merc w124s.
Someone could rock up with 148 batteries and 148 cans of fresh petrol decades after you'd snuffed it and the Mercs would all just fire up and drive away. Something tells me those french cars will need work...
There is some truth in that, however the W124's reputation is getting more akin to those Chuck Norris statements that did the rounds, there were very robust and capable of huge mileage, but now, even the youngest ones are 23 years old (oldest are 33 years old !) and they can be utterly knackered, the do actually rust, the screens delaminate and the wiring loom decomposes on some.

Of course, you have a better chance than on an older, more complex Citroen but I think nowadays potential buyers cannot rely on the "Hewn From Granite" reputation they used to have, unless you are buying an absolute minter from an enthusiast with full records, assume anything else is a money pit, and still looking shiny is no guarantee, like any old car, it can be rotten and broken in many ways.

Possibly, but it would probably break down on the way home.

There appears to be a DS & XM either side of that white GTI turbo as well.

I'd love a CX - sorely tempted to head over and have a look, there's gotta be a useable one in there somewhere!

My only surprise is that the epically tight-fisted Dutch ever bought so many high end models new. I would have thought that they would all have been diesel Leaders or Reflexes

56 Douvrins (13 of 'em on LPG), and 35 diesels out of the 144? Quite a few 20/RE/RS/RD poverty-spec in there, too.

The big surprise is how many of the s2 GTi non-turbos are manual box (12 to 4 autos) - we only got autos here.

I used to drive my Dad’s DS23 Safari to school when I was 17 (great for taking mates to the pub wink) and would love to have a CX estate. Trouble is I have poor to non-existent mechanical knowledge/skills so would end up hosing cash at someone to make it work. Anyone got a serious idea how much to refurb one of these? I’m thinking to driveable/clean (a bit like one of Breadvans BL sheds) rather than concours.

Usual story of "start with the best you can find". There's really only one major parts supplier, CX Basis in Germany, and their prices are not often remarked on for their cheapness.

Bodywork rots...
Electrics aren't half as bad as later cars, not least because they're so much simpler.
Mechanicals are pretty damn bombproof.
Hydraulics aren't hard, but do tend to scare general mechanics off.

Plus, these are truly the last proper big Citroen in terms of suspension, pre PSA bdisation and cost cutting (my opinion).

A lot of patience and or money. You're either at the mercy of CX Basis or someone with a Citroen addiction who might eventually get a part sent to you.

I loved mine, but to have another, I'd buy the nicest I could and aim to keep it that way.

That is an amazing collection. I'd love to turn the ambulance into a mini-camper.

Same, but with W123s, Fiat 124 Sports, Toyota FJs, in fact anything old and interesting...only the Dutch :-)

No doubt about it. The CX was launched in 74, the same year PSA rescued Citroen from bankruptcy after Fiat pulled out. The next cars Citroen launched were the LN, then the Visa...

That is a fantastic looking car - well done and lucky you! Why did you get rid?

It was rougher than it looks in the pictures and had a few issues and I lacked the time and money to sort them sadly. Glad I got to experience it though, definitely the coolest car I've ever owned.

No. You'd still have a Citröen CX. wink

Jesting aside, it's an interesting old car and the last of the really quirky Citröens. That doesn't make them good buys.

I suspect there's haggling to be done. And I'm tempted by an ECTO-1 themed camper conversion... biggrin

My wife's Grandad has one of these on extremely low miles, prob <1000, in the garage. It'll have a whole heap of issues from not being driven for about 40yrs, but looks nearly new.

Why have nearly everyone of them have their bonnets popped up on the left hand side, looking from front.

Had a CX 2400 Pallas auto in the early 90s. Loved it but it rusted away.

Because the bonnet support is only on the LH-from-front (RHD driver's) side. It's got a manual latch on it, so when people try and close the bonnet without de-latching it, they bend the bonnet...
