Walking back to my car from work last night I passed an all but empty car park with one car in the corner about 1am. I was at a distance but the headlights were horizontal lines with a thicker part at the edge. I was further away when it started up and it was a thunderous V8, made my modified XFR sound like a Tesla, absolutely monstrous. It was a large saloon possibly XJ sized but the different lights, the rear lights were circular but dark in the middle. Sorry about the poor description but I'd love to know what I heard. Any punts I think I'd recognize it from it's silhouette?

Were they in pairs? Could be a Nissan GTR if so, but obviously they're not saloons.

I initially thought Maserati Quattroporte, but the rear light description doesn't match.

Possibly a VXR8.

Did it look like a modern/current model? Also was it definitely a saloon?

My initial thought, but doesn't have the narrow headlights.

The Alfa Quadrifoglio?

Edit: rear lights probably make this a "no".

Yeah the headlights don't really fit but the rears do so thought it was worth a suggestion. Don't know of anyone modding the headlights but might have happened.

Even with a straight-through exhaust you'd never mistake the sound of a GTR for a V8. They can be very loud, don't get me wrong, but they sound totally different to an XFR which is the OP's point of comparison.

Surely this must be something big and American? None of the usual suspects like CTS-V / Charger / 300C fit those light descriptions at all though.

Yeah, I did think the sound isn't like a v8 but they can be quite thunderous with the right exhaust. I did think Dodge Charger too, modified rear lights are fairly common and if it was louder than OP's XFR then it could have been modified.

Thanks for the replies fellas. Can't swear it was 4 door to be honest, a large 2 door about S class sized at a guess. The rear lights did remind me of a GTR but I don't think they were in pairs. The silhouette did lend itself to something American, the Dodge Charger call is getting very close but rear lights don't work unless modded.

Listening to some youtube clips it was very similar to the Dodge on start up but blasted down the road, I haven't found a clip to match it yet.
Actually this comes close https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2NqtmDmeaA or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBuZJPlH12o.

I love the sound my XFR makes but as a shift worker I wouldn't go any louder in deference to my neighbors but these things sound immense.

May have been a Ford Shelby Mustang GT350R. Headlights sound similar to your description. Not sure about rear lights though.
