Diesel hate? ..wtf?

If you are concerned about the level of plant food emissions, and are willing to ignore all of the other noxious st that diesels spew out, diesels compare well against petrols.
That wasn't the case 10 years ago, so why is it today? Are we smarter now and in another ten years will this be reversed again to suit the politics? Its probably academic, as we'll all be in electric vehicles then apart from the lucky few with 'Historics'. Some of us are not convinced by the VW hype..

Why all the sudden hate for diesels?
People have short memories, weren't we recently encourage to buy them as they were quieter, cleaner and more economical?
Remember this advert?

There isn't a sudden hate here on PH, it's been a long standing hate for all the time I've been here with thrice weekly threads quite often. The threads have often gone into tens of pages and very often there are graphs.People have short memories, weren't we recently encourage to buy them as they were quieter, cleaner and more economical?

In a nut shell, those of who might like Skoda Octavias or similar, with a derv engine and auto box, were completely wrong to do so. We should have had a petrol engine doing 25mpg, requiring refueling 3 times a week and we should be changing gear for ourselves and the fact that we don't is hard proof that we're not petrol heads.

I was a petrol fan always until I borrowed an Octavia tdi. The torque, smoothness, flexibility in slow traffic, excellent drive on twisty roads and 65mpg, made me a believer in the diesel for a commuter and tourer. As a motorist, what's not to like?
You sounds like Alan Partridge in his "Knowing Me Knowing Yule" Christmas special, when he starts talking about how good the Rover 800 is. I hate Diesel engines too.
And no, they are not as quiet and refined as a petrol. Yes, they have become better, but they are not on par with petrol engines.
Imagine where we'd be, when money to develop the Diesel would have gone partially to the petrol and partially to EV/Hybrid technology.
Although as I understand, a lot of todays turbo technology originated from the Diesel, so at least one good thing!
But yes, I'll admit it, I'm a Diesel hater.
I hate how they sound.
I hate the black smoke that pollutes the cities.
I hate the smell of them.
I hate how they run out of puff at 4k rpm.
I hate that they are so unrefined.

you must have experienced some pretty crappy petrol engines to describe the VW group PD diesel as smooth and flexiblethat's the first 2 things i would say it is not.

All cars have emissions of one type or another, its what they do.. Old petrol motors can smoke as bad as old diesels.
They do but Diesel is particularly harmful.Filibuster said:

Have you been in a modern V6 or V8 diesel? They are definitely not unrefined, there's a reason the big exec cars like A8/S class still chooce to use V6 and V8 dieselsAnd no, they are not as quiet and refined as a petrol. Yes, they have become better, but they are not on par with petrol engines.

It will just go from one hot topic to another, it was co2 so they pushed diesel, now co2 output is on the up it will be c02 again, they are already reducing speed limits on the m4 to reduce pollution, soon it will be something else to use as a buzzword, in 40 years it will be EV batteries leaking or something else.
It’s like plastic straws, banning them won’t solve the problem.
It always gets me the UK Is such a drop in the ocean, other parts of the world are still chucking out massive amounts of co2 etc
It’s like coal power stations, we are closing all of ours but other places in the world aren’t?
We are obsessed with downsizing our cars engines to tiny ones but in America? No chance,

Is it? It wasn't ten years ago, so why is it now, or do you just always believe what your told without question just because its a 'modern' view?
It has always been and you could always have known about this. Things are simple:Do to more energy in Diesel and a slightly higher efficiency, Diesel emits a bit less CO2/mile than petrol.
About 15 years ago, governments all over Europe decided to push Diesel to lower their CO2 output.
That is why Diesel is cheaper at the pump than petrol, because it's Tax is reduced in most countries (not in Switzerland, where Diesel is more expensive than 95RON and we have one of the lowest Diesel proportions).
Politicians only cared about CO2 emissions and not the air as such. Big mistake as it turns out!
