RE: Shed of the Week: Volkswagen Golf Mk2
Discussion
Reminds me of my second car, a basic 1.3 CL (The joke being, as they were so poorly specced, that the CL stood for cigarette lighter).
Progress was leisurely to say the least, but on mines spax suspension at least i didnt need to slow for corners (Handled so, so well).
My 16v mk2 that followed was so unreliable in comparison.
This just brings home how well specified cars of today are as well.

I had a 1992 8v GTI in Tornado red and I absolutely loved it, having come from a 1996 1.2 Corsa it felt like a rocket ship.
I was in my early 20's at the time and it did get chavved up a bit. I would love it back in original condition but alas it has not had any tax for over 15yrs so suspect it is long gone.
I would not be tempted by this shed at all, it has seemingly no redeeming features whatsoever.
Another unsuccessful attempt to inject humour into the article; unnecessarily as imo it falls flatter than this car should be. I am grateful that at least the extremely unamusing anecdotes involving Mrs. Shed were notable by their absence.

Clean/simple and contemporary, nice sight to see on the roads these days.
Whoever buys this, please please keep it original for heavens sake, far too many of these get butchered/tacky'fied badly and taken to shows, less is more!
Who cares about how fast something is aswell, or how big your d**k is, sorry, I mean engine is, I drive a '66 Beetle and its a hoot to drive, (0 - not sure!) sure gets more looks and admirers than most exotica these days.

Agreed on mileage, mk2s wear their miles well.
I love poverty spec mk2 golfs. You can carry enough in the spare wheel well to fix anything that goes wrong, which doesn’t tend to be that much. Right on the cusp of classic and modern motoring - quirky enough to have bags of character, but comfortable and reliable enough to use.

A quick look through the PH classifieds selecting shed money & pre 2000 brings up much better metal. On a similar theme to this week's article I like the red Fiesta going for £750 - no idea how to post a link on my phone, sorry! Or how about that 239k miles Lexus 400? There are a few MX-5's but don't have flame proof overalls..
This certainly fulfills the shed category, but that's about it. A nest-egg in 'crap-of-the-crap' spec, with a worn out interior and suspicious mileage history? Pull the other one...
A friend of mine had a MK2 with this engine/box. It was awful. Slow, unrefined and just generally hateful. Given what else you can get for £1k, this would be among the last things on my list.

I loved the Mk2 GTI 8v I had for 6 months or so when I was 23. This car doesn't appeal as much . . . but back then - and now I guess - the scene did like turning cars into CL spec. I remember one in the same Jade Green as mine on the cover of PVW and I was very tempted to rip all the kit off mine and head the same way. In fact, near the end of its time with me, someone kindly started the ball rolling by knocking the NSR plastic off it in a car park in Redditch.
So, the only way this could tempt me is to go that sleeper route - buy a Mk4 1.8T for it's engine, fit coilovers, ARBs and source G60 or similar steels. Lovely sleeper. Beyond my skill level, mind!
I have fond memories of 2 poverty-spec Mk2s as a kid - the red G-reg 1.3 my Dad had as a courtesy car when he was going through his phase of punting his Nova SR into the back of things. It was an admirably more solid car than the Nova and I quite liked it's lack of spec for some reason. My German exchange partner's family had a white one which I thought was great. Again, the novelty I guess of sensible no-frills German solidity.

It's a bit chicken soup isn't it - dull and fairly inoffensive but probably not many people's first choice! My mate had a MkII 1.3CL, with added GTI four headlight grille; I seem to recollect that got up to about 120k mikes and still the interior looked in better shape than this one.
The earlier comment about Mk1 Escorts and Morris Minors was interesting - certainly there are things I could have bought 15-20 years ago that are probably now trading at 3 - 5 times the value at least (Escort Mk1, BMW 635CSi, Porsche 928, Jag XJS) and I wish I'd had the money and space to do so. I get the feeling that a MkII Golf might not be a bad investment but I think I'd be looking for something a bit less dogeared and a bit more exciting than this one if I was looking for long term financial gain, even if it meant outlaying more money initially.

I'm presuming mk2 Golf clocks only go up to 100k and then start again.
Nope, they go to a million. A number (if not all) mk1 golfs went to 100k but you can see the extra digit in the interior dash shot. And my interior was a damn sight better than shed. Looks like mice have been passengers for most of the miles covered. Mine:

Just double checked the calendar to check it wasn't April 1st. The 2 worst sheds ever in the last 2 weeks. Look on the brightside , it can't be worse next week (although I recall saying that last week). Just because something is old doesn't make it interesting.
