I think the Alfa 147 GTA would take offence to that!
Or a 5-pot Focus ST....

The VR6, DSG and Haldex is a great drivetrain but you can also get it in the Mk2 Audi TT which is lighter, sharper, faster and much prettier. The TT is also curiously cheaper than the R32, that's where my money would go (we have one in the household and it's tremendous).

Indeed - if you want that engine (and it does sound good) then the TT would seem to be the much better bet. Do you really need 5 doors that much?

I had a 3 door (much nicer looking than the 5 door) when living in Switzerland, epic car. Yes not that fast, yes a bit heavy, yes awful fuel economy, but that engine note never got boring, and 4motion definitely saved me a few times when the snow arrived. Took it on loads of mountain road drives and had fun with it on the German AutoBahn.

Nice cars but they don't offer enough over a GTI to justify the extra running costs for me.

I think you've some-how managed to mistake a MK5 Golf R32 with an EP3 Civic Type R wink

It's all subjective, but this Golf looks nothing like a van without windows to me, whatsoever.

Indeed. If you told someone in the mid 90’s you were driving a 4WD, 2.0 Turbo that could kiss 155mph they’d have thought you were talking about an Escort Cossy. TT is under rated.

Was going to say the same but you and SturdyHSV beat me to it. I do like the noise the VR6 makes, but a Busso pips it every time for me. Certainly with a Unicorse (or more likely a Wizard copy) exhaust. 147 GTA looks nicer too.

I think the Mk5 example here in that shade of grey looks pretty tidy. I never really liked the look of the Mk5 R32s, but this has changed my perception. Was a big fan of the Mk4 R32 looks-wise (conversely, I hate all other Mk4s, they look blobby and have aged badly), and I felt that the Mk5 looked too close to the rest of the range (twin pipes aside) to set it apart. I guess my taste has changed as I creep towards 40 this year, because now it's the understated looks of this Mk5 that appeals to me.

Nice to see the MK5 R32 getting some front page presence biggrin

Into my 3rd year of ownership and still can't get enough of that sound - uprated exhaust helps smile

I've shared the roads with cars from across the spectrum and the R32 holds its own - no matter the weather!

I had the VR6 engine for a coupe of years, lovely engine.

Just a pity it was in a VW Sharan. But (stop laughing) if you absolutely needed a bus for the little nippers - years ago it was the way to go.

And don't forget about BMW 130i.

That's what my money went on. More power, lighter, faster and much better fuel economy plus rear wheel drive.

Not a looker but you can't see it when you're in it and to be fair i thought it looked quite good from some angles and the optional xenons improved the front end.

I had one! Still miss it. Very slow by modern standards but the engine was nice. Got to have it in Deep Blue Pearl though I think.

From the driving seat the thing you see the most are the blue instrument needles, I always thought they were pretty cool.

Had a DBP one when they were first launched and kept it for 5 years. The DSG really suited the character of the V6. Loved it...

To be pedantic it is 247bhp (250PS) smile

Can’t believe how overpriced the mk5 Golf R32 has become. Yes they sound awesome but that’s about it. I considered getting one a few times when the prices were still sensible but over the last 8 months or so they seem to have inflated to stupid money probably due to this type of V6 engine dying out and becoming rare.
I’ve seen prices averaging 7.5-8k for ropey 12 year old examples with 70-100k on from private sellers which is just laughable for a Golf especially given a Focus ST225 of the same age can be had for 4.5k and with a £300 remap will be just as much fun and as quick if not quicker than the Golf.
The R32 has also lost its appeal somewhat given how many of the new Golf R’s are on the road thanks to cheap lease deals. Would you spend 6k over 2 years for a brand new far faster Golf R or 8k for a high mileage ropey 12 year old example? It’s a no contest for me.

Deluded. An R32 wouldn't see which way a Focus ST went (sonorously warbled off to?), unless it was snowing hehe

Friend had a MK5 golf, only an FSI however the build quality was atrocious, nearly everything broke inside, from the grab handles, window switches to the seat recliners, awful quality, especially the seats, material seemed to be from fabric, polyester and st. Engine light was always on and the CAT failed twice. To think someone would spend 15 grand on a much more complicated variant of my friends heap of st is insane!

Compared to my (old) 51 plate EP3 Type R, It’s no match and for that 15k, I’d much rather an FN2 Mugen Civic, will piss on the R32’s face.

Yeah but not everybody wants to scream around at 9000 rpm in 2nd gear just to make (horrible noisy) progress. Vtec Yo...
