for those who complain about the PH editorial staff being absent from the forum threads:

this Capri post is proof that they do indeed read what we write

it's the perfect riposte (pun intended) to the £100,000 Sagaris of the other day

ps: I wouldn't have this Tickford variant (too expensive IMO), but I'd love any regular Capri with a light, tasteful restomod

I've always loved these ever since my Dad came home with a brochure of one. They do look a little ropey though in fairness. I saw one at Ford Fair last year.

I had the Turbo Technics version back in the 80's. Fitted the TT kit myself. Nice as the Tickford uprates were, it was aimed at a market that was tiny for a Capri. I replaced my TT Capri with an 87 Cosworth, though the Capri engine was smoother and had less turbo lag. It was also a match for a standard Cos up to 140mph. I think someone that worked on the Tickford produced a very similar bodykit under the KAT name, I tried to buy one, but I heard Tickford shut him down.
I think Simon Saunders, the guy behind the Ariel Atom designed the bodykit for these and is the bloke you're talking about??
Sounds familiar. I think he sold a few kits before a threat of legal action stopped him. I bought RGA front and rear spoilers instead, that were designed by John miles I think.
I bought a KAT front grill for my Metro as I couldn't afford a Fraser Tickford

I do love that but I have 2 issues.

It isn't worth 50k. 20k tops.

And surely with the grill blocked up, will overheating not be an issue?
I'm afraid with price you have to put personal opinion aside and let the market tell you the price, its simple supply and demand, like the article says they were fetching £20k+ many years ago and given the price of other Fords and 80's specials the prices have rocketed.
Fair point but still, I'll be amazed if someone pays more than 20k for it. If they do, they're as barmy as a box of frogs.

Did Tickford ever produce a special that wasn't worse than the original car?

Aston Martin revisited the bolt-on bodykit styling with the 2012 Virage. That proved equally successful.

The Capri was a lot better, the price was the problem.

coincidentally, the Tickford Capri came up in a recent thread about the Ford Fiesta ST (thread here)

today's ICE is a great improvement on the past

-- FIESTA ST MK8 -- TICKFORD CAPRI
0 to 60 mph 6.5 6.7
Top Speed (mph) 144 137
Displacement (L) 1.5 2.8
Horsepower 200 205

NOTES
- Tickford Capri data from Wikipedia here
- Fiesta ST Mk8 data in Pistonheads article
- Both vehicles are turbocharged

That looks like what would happen if Mick Jagger were reincarnated as a small cheap hatchback from the eighties.

Anyone remember the Autocar issue that pitted it against the Sierra Cosworth, for a 16 year old me it was better than my prized Razzle Readers Wifes special biggrin
Lol laugh used to love a good issue of Razzle. Out of interest which came out top in the Autocar tests the Cosworth or the Capri?

What the article didn't say was that there were so many unsold Capris then that they decided to spice a few up.

The hideous price and ugly conversion resulted in far less being built than anticipated.

Rust was always an issue as most cars had been sitting in a field for months before going off to Tickford.

There used to be one parked at the Eastern Electricity car park in Ipswich (where my gf at the time worked) all in white. The owner also had a Turbo Technics convertible in white with red lettering down the side. I would often park next to it and admire it while waiting for her to finish work.

Back in 1989 / 90 it was the dogs, much better than my p.o.s 2.0 gl Capri I had at the time.

ICE? I dunno I remember when all the cool kids called their banging stereos ICE . You do have to except that back in the Eighties the Ford Cologne 2.8 "ICE" was actually pretty old fashioned and produced less power than the equivalent Vauxhall, Alfa Romeo and BMW six cylinder engines.

So to compare it to today's tech is pretty harsh! Having said that I would still rather have a V6 Capri over a bloody fiesta!

5mph faster from the same bhp seems fanciful for the MK8 over the MK7 Fiesta ST.

Wikipedia (normal health warnings apply) gives an interesting history of Tickford. Apparently built the Puma Racing and did engineering work on the original Focus RS and fast Fords in Australia, before being bought by Prodrive and finally by Intertek plc (a big testing company) in 2013, where the name seems to have eventually died.
I'm surprised that the Pistonheads readership needs to be informed about Tickford. Am I that old or is the demographic that young?

I did work for Tickford once for five minutes before it suddenly became Prodrive. Heady days it was, tearing about in souped up Focus mules.

Anyway, the Tickford name still lives on, albeit not in a very convincing fashion.

That's what I thought

Presumed Tickford would be known about re the RS500 and other stuff - hence the RS500 vs Tickford Capri twin test in Autocar mentioned previously
