But let's face it anyone paying over 458 money for an ancient decepid bronchitic Beetle simply confirms they have more money than sense furthermore value does not equate to driving pleasure or ability.

Could always buy a proper supercar modern 'Beetle' for that money anyway.

New supercar v classic?

A no brainer for new supercar.

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS is a very cool car and common as muck near Nurburg. I wouldn’t call a 911 a jumped up beetle as is a disrespectful to the hard work Porsche have done and they are very far apart. As for VW Beetles I never really got them / understood them when I was younger but I respect their place in history, what they achieved and also Porsche helped design them.

I am a huge Porsche fan and they are one of the few new cars I would actually buy. But a 911 or one of these - hard to walk past the Alfa...

Yes a guy near me owned an Alfa like that years back and I always thought it was quite a car.

Top comedy though what junk cars rose tinted spectacled anoraks call classics scratchchin

Why would anyone would throw £££s of their hard earned restoring such rubbish.

Slow, noisy, impractical, polluting, ancient driving dynamics, rust prone, woefully outdated in every area.

And that's when new.

The mind boggles. biggrin:

Supercar owners fall into two categories, dicks and enthusiasts.

I see a lot of dicks at school (private...). The owners are dicks before you even know what they drive, and when you follow an Aventador doing 30 in an NSL and braking at the apex of a corner, you know the driver would be a lot happier in a Kia.

On the flip side I know some proper enthusiasts who aren’t dicks in the slightest and just like cars, so spend everything they have on them.

OP sounds like he encountered a dick.

I have never heard of this practice. I own a GT3. I'm also about to drop the kids off at the pool so I'm going to give it a bash although am concerned it may make reading Classic Car Weekly tricky.

Exactly, the rotting mess in the picture looks like a Triumph Herald, its probably too far gone but a good one is quite appealing . In theory it would be fun at low speed which in this day and age of ever lower speed limits makes sense.

Appealing in what way though?

Serious question.

Or emotional reasons...dad had one etc. Has nothing to do with the quality of the drive etc.

Personally I think they look quite charming, they are easy to work on (front end flips up). They have skinny tyres and slightly wayward rear suspension making handling interesting if pushed.

Mind you I also fancy the idea of an Austin 7 for a bit of variety

If that were road legal I'd like to drive it, I don't think you get classic cars at all do you? It may well be inferior in almost every respect to a modern (except driving visibility, turning circle, ownership costs and a few sundry odds and ends) but what it has in spades is charm and character, which is the chief attraction of classic ownership.

Those Alfas were so cheap in the 80s - ok but become a very different car with £120k spent on them.
I think you're going for the same ethos with your 328 for a fraction of the cost
I guess that's how that started out - a very cheap Alfa 1300... fettled over many years

I’d buy that for the number plate. biggrin

I might then feel obliged to buy a used Ferrari to put it on?

It's ironic many comments here show the same judgemental nonsense as those in the OP. If you like cars then it doesn't matter if your a Porsche, Fezza or Classics man. Each to their own. Im often mystified by people's choice in car but, hey, we're all different.

Yup, if I had enough money I’d have a barn full of cars ranging from a beetle and a VW Camper all the way to a Chiron with pretty much every type of car in between ....and I’d certainly drive them all (just each one very little due to number of cars and lack of time)
