I'm going to sound like and be a massive dick here but fk it its my opinion on how the site is going.
He's not a new member though is he? It is the new standard. Someone has a motor related problem types "car problem" bike problem" etc into google. Pistonheads comes up. registers and first post is a cry for information.
Fine if someone who has a motoring interest been a member for a while then has a problem. I understand it is not a time served forum or "he has been here the longest and so must be wisest" but it is almost like NHS tourism.
The site has become so boring to read. Topics like "should I buy a vauxhall mereva"
The boring daily car/snotter used to be one topic which was interesting as a change but now it is the bread and butter.
The site is becoming "what car" or parkers.

Man who has automotive (ok, bike) problem posts on UK's foremost automotive forum for advice. Seems reasonable to me.
We may have done the private sale/caveat emptor chat many times (and perhaps the OP should have done a search) but I can appreciate that if you aren't knowledgeable in this area, it can seem rather daunting.
The majority of members probably 'take out' more than they 'put in' but that's forum life.
By treating n00bs nicely, they are more likely to contribute again and perhaps help you in the future with a problem you may have.

He blew one up the same morning a part of me thinks it could be a completely different engine.
1. I suspect it was his old bike that he destroyed hence wanting your one2. You do not need a contract, caveat emptor is automatically implied into a private sale.
3. You do not appear to have misrepresented the bike unless in person you told him this bike would run for miles .......

He's sent lots of photos from the apparent damaged engine one of which shows a hole where the Crank has basically shot itself through the casing... I just believe it was sold as running and he's somehow destroyed it on the way home. He will not send a picture of the engine number though
Stop talking to him, offering refunds, asking for independent inspections, engine numbers, etc. All you are doing is letting him get the upper hand. While missing the point."It's sold as seen, bye."

Seems very likely. Have you taken screen prints of that? He blew one up the same morning a part of me thinks it could be a completely different engine.
He's blown his own up.
He's bought yours - which I have little doubt is absolutely fine.
He's sent pics of his blown up engine which he hopes will get you to cough up for a replacement.
If you do he will fit it to his old one & flog it on or pocket the money.
He's trying to take you for a mug.
I'm also inclined to think he's bought one a long way from home to avoid you popping round & seeing your old bike intact & fine or seeing him riding it around.

Photoshop & other internettrickery means you need to be careful of a photo purporting to be your engine number on the blown engine.
I'd suggest your communications should be concluded with your offer withdrawn & if he wishes to take you to court then let him get on with it.
I think court would be highly unlikely & you'd be wanting the engine produced.
Someone who knows what they're talking about legally will no doubt be along shortly to correct me

The only legal rights he has under the Consumer Act are:
The seller must have the right to sell the car/motorcycle.
The vehicle/motorcycle should match the description given by the seller.
The car/motorcyclemust be roadworthy – it is a criminal offence to sell an unroadworthy car/motorcycle and an MOT certificate from a test several months ago is no guarantee that the car/motorcycle is roadworthy today.
How can anyone ever sell something that has failed an MOT then? Or sell a car for breaking? The seller must have the right to sell the car/motorcycle.
