Yeah it's an informed opinion.

I am not saying that they wouldn't go faster, but until you can completely resurface the TT course to ensure it is billiard top smooth and remove Ballaugh Bridge, the bike is going to remain faster.
You say that like its a fact
Knowing what the surface is like there and what is involved to ride there, I can say with a fair degree of certainty that in the current state, a car that is designed for smooth surfaces, will not be manageable around there to achieve a 135+mph lap.
Its still an opinion though.
It is only an opinion yes, but one from a fairly qualified and informed insight. However, that all counts for nothing, as there are far more qualified people on here to give an insight. Just a shame half have never been to the Isle of Man.

The Subaru was a Time Attack sort of job, so quick, but waay off the pace of a pukka racing car. Honestly , don't people ever go near race circuits and see for themselves ? Why assume a touring car type device is the last word ? They are not even close- around my local circuit a 800bhp Evo TA car is about 7 seconds (in 2miles ) slower than a 220bhp F3 car .

This Subaru was 10s slower around the Ring than a Porsche GT2RS road car, never mind the 1m40s deficit to the 919.

fact is until a 919 or some hyper super duper purpose built billion pound car goes round the billiard table relaid surface of the TT course, you can hypothesise all you want or run it through your "simulation".
until you have actually visited the island, experienced the bikes whizzing past your nose at 180mph + and ride the roads yourself, experiencing the bumps, crests, undulations, kerbs, you can form any opinion you like.
even if one day, a car goes and beats the outright lap record, it won't matter. nobody goes to the TT to watch cars go fast. its all about the bikes

The point being that a track car will be all at sea on the Mountain Course with its real life road surfaces, recessed drains, corrugations etc. Which is why they chose a rally car for the record attempt.

So nothing to do with the fact that Subaru, as event sponsors, were the only manufacturer with the possibility of running a car at speed around the course, and the best/only competition car that Subaru can muster is a modified rally car?

If they could have chosen any car I bet it wouldnt have been a Subaru.

A car can be modified to cope with any road surface so that isnt an issue. Its if you want/are allowed thats the only thing stopping you.

This would be the same Subaru that lapped the Ring in under 7 minutes. About 13 seconds quicker than the fastest ever bike around the course.

So how come a bike can deal with a bumpy track but a car can't?

Anyone care to explain the physics?

A car can. I saw both the Mark Higgins timed laps, the car was magnificent, totally composed and stable under all conditions

Solo bikes have quite softly set up long travel (by sport bike standards) suspension to absorb the bumps. They also have decent ground clearance and a short wheelbase by car standards and crucially no low mounted body elements like a nose cone or diffuser. Bike riders can also lift the front over really severe corrugations to reduce inputs unsettling the bike and causing a tank slapper or worse.

Mark Higgins had an almighty tank slapper in the Impreza going down Bray Hill iirc. Not that it seemed to phase him. Or the other bloke in the car.

Bike manufacturers have never had a crack at the ring but the guy that did the time was handy I'd be interested to see what a Superstock bike would do at the ring.

If anyone wants to pay for it I have access to a 2018 Superbike/Superstock & Supersport bikes as well as a rider very quick rider who's never been around the Ring but who's willing to give it a good run, it'll have to be in early 2019 as the bikes won't be free until after the Macau GP, feel free to PM me.

I reckon a Caterham 620S would be the road car of choice.

Do you think that a car with a 145mph top speed could average 135mph over a whole lap?

Sevens annihilate bikes (and most other things) round bends but struggle at higher speed . My last one , an R400, would run out of puff before the bikes got into top gear. So not a car for IoM ...
