So how come Yaris and Auris arent 50% more expensive than other brands? Given they come on the same ferries and transporters?
Because they don't. Other Toyota cars are built in Europe at Toyota's factories, the gt86 is built in Japan at Subaru's factory then boated over. That makes a difference.

Also the drop links aren't off a Corsa C, they just happen to be the same size.
Right, on that note, i'm out.

They're cheap in America too and thats not exactly local to the Subaru factory but lets not let facts get in the way.

And of course the likes of Sydney Australia is a mere 7,500 KM away from the Subaru factory, so just round the corner when you think about it.

So I submit - GT86s are a great car - perfectly priced, fantastic power and a great engine. Sorry for ever doubting them.

Always thought the engine was the weak part of this otherwise great car; whether that is based on its lack of fibre compared with Subaru’s great engines of the recent past or because it feels lacklustre vs what performance is on offer in other European models for the money, not sure.

And that is the problem for the 86/BRZ in Europe.

Although they do without the image of the beemer, which is a good thing.

I used to own a gt86 and the while £30k was too much for me to part with (which is why I bought used) it's about the money for a entry level sports car these days. Only a Mx5 is cheaper, a lotus Elise, Alfa 4c, alpine 110, Porsche cayman all make gt86 look well priced. (Comparing with a hot hatch isn't a fair comparison as most the development of these is shared with regular car).

But people often have a budget to work to, so comparisons with any other fun car of about the same price is inevitable.

And yet I cannot think of another car that gets so many fking stupid comparisons on here.
Oh, a GT86? Why didn't you get 300,000 packets of crisps?

I think the rather 'lumpy' mapping has a lot to do with it.

Plus the feeling the rest of it could cope with slightly more power.

It doesn't bother me, but I can understand the complaint.

"torque dip' + a tad more character, performance and response is an easy fix, and for me when applied to say a facelifted ex demonstrator, low £20k ish, virtually no miles etc results in a sweet package.

.... with likable attributes different to hot hatches, Caymans, M140, 370z etc etc.

Few cars are perfect and the good bits of the gt86 far outweigh the bad bits in my humble opinion, I actually love this colour !!

Assuming they are well set up what really appeals to me about this model is the OEM upgraded suspension set up and v high quality damping. I wonder if it has been set up road or track biassed ?

But I only really read the comments for the fking stupid comparisons; they're usually funny, and that's probably the best parody yet!

Anyway, I don't like crisps...rather have a Borgward Isabella Coupe or pork scratchings.

No need to apologise, agreed £30k Cayman Vs £30k gt86 is an interesting call.

BUT a £23k gt86 with 1,500 miles & 4 years manufacturers warranty left vs a older £23k Cayman gets more interesting.

Both very good choices ....

Off the top of my head: Fiesta ST, BMW 1-series with an M badge slapped on it. Audi TT. Even the 370Z isn't really in the same class. I bet no-one who bought a GT-86 considered any of them.

It's a short list (above) of real competitors: MX-5 or second hand Cayman.

If the cars are fun to own and are of a similar price then its fair enough to compare them.

"The GT-86 is no faster 0-60 than my 320d" is another common one. A sensible comparison?

Thats not an alternative suggestion though, thats just folk comparing 0-60 times. Certain hot hatches and other coupes are alternatives.

For me at least the only thing that could replace my gt86 is a Cayman. And I can't afford a cayman.

Is it really that slow?
