RE: Audi A1 quattro: Driven

Absolutely love them for how ridiculous in the engineering involved and how expensive they are.
Think they look fantastic too.
Forgive the ignorance, but where is the ridiculous engineering in this? The only thing the article mentions is the use of a different (but fairly plain / contemporary) engine.Think they look fantastic too.
In what way is the quattro better to drive than the S1? Given that a newer S1 can be had in RHD and at half the price, surely you're just paying for the novelty / uniqueness?
Or am I missing a trick here...?

"Audi had to re-engineer the body-in-white of the A1 for the quattro, to accommodate a new multi-link rear axle as well as the four-wheel drive bits. Boot space suffered quite badly as a result but was clearly deemed a worthwhile sacrifice. "In what way is the quattro better to drive than the S1? This is definitely a cool and interesting little car. The price is utterly bonkers though. I guess you'd just have to lie when anyone asked how much it was.
Lie VS Truth
Guy at Petrol Station: "Nice car love, what did that cost you?"
Me: "Thanks mate, it was £20k".
Guy at Petrol Station: "F**K me, that's pretty steep. You could have got a Fiesta ST for 3 grand less!"
Me: "I know, it does seem a lot for an A1, but it is pretty cool"...

Guy at Petrol Station: "Nice car love, what did that cost you?"
Me: "Thanks mate, it was £40k".
Guy at Petrol Station: "WTF, are you having a laugh! Ha ha ha ha ha!"
Me: Exit stage left

But what does re-engineer mean and why is it ridiculous engineering? Surely that covers anything from a bit of fiddling around the edges to move the headlights through to a complete rebuild with new panels all around? I appreciate that any of these things will be costly to Audi, but how am I benefiting from it when compared to just buying an S1?The S1 has all of this as well and I wouldn't describe a mass market S car from Audi as ridiculous engineering.

Having owned a very low miles ur Quattro Turbo in white with white wheels, I, like many others, will confirm what an absolute royal pain in the ar5e they are to keep clean.
I must admit, the choice between an A1q and a ur would be an easy call for me, the ur would win every time. But as cars they aren’t compatible.
Would I want one. And would I want one over a BMW M1? Hmmmn. Probably not.
But then, real-world, what would be a competitor that is ‘special’?
Can you buy an M1 for £40k?I must admit, the choice between an A1q and a ur would be an easy call for me, the ur would win every time. But as cars they aren’t compatible.

On the topic of the A1 Quattro, I like them, maybe dowm to the wheels though.
As mentioned, an A1 S1 with similar rally wheels would make me a cracking daily. Never thought I would like a new'ish Audi. I should add I would prefer an original Audi Quattro S1 over this.

Love those wheels and the fact that it's quattro. This or that engine who cares in this case tbh. Would have liked some more interior luxury configurability. Also, contrary to popular opinion or so it seems, I like the exterior looks of the A1.
But it's not a Quattro!!! It does certainly look wicked though!
It may be an OK car... but it looks terrible & was way over-priced at launch, as road tests at the time agree with. Second-hand ones now cost over £30k..... for which you can get a pretty decent integrale Evo if you want to go similarly left-field, or a used Cayman which is a far superior car.

I remember people saying similar about the SWB Quattro road cars..... This may not approach the value of those but if, as you say, second hand ones cost over £30k ( 75% of new price ) despite the S1 being available more cheaply it may well rise a fair bit more. Also, if you need a 4-seater a Cayman won't be superior!
Typical PH badge snobbery ignorant written article. If it was a Civic Type R etc you would have been pratting on about chav etc or about the styling.
This car is NO different. If I saw it down the street, I would have thought someone just tried to 'mod' their A1 as you put it about aftermarket creation (it DOES look aftermarket). It doesn't look factory at all.
