Merely a 2 seater 4 Series that will mess your hair. Big deal - poor effort.
Erm, could you not argue the same for many 2 seater cars? Audi TT - just a messy-hair version of the A4? SLC Merc is just the same of a C class or whatever?

There is however already an m240i convertible.

Apart from not having the ‘back seats’ (loosly used!), not sure how different this will be?

yes The TT is an A3 not an A4, but yes I'm not sure why anyone would expect anything else. Previous versions of the Z4 and indeed the Z3 before them have been much the same.

Hmmm, I think I'll stick with my Z3M. Much lighter, similar power, no traction control, manual gearbox, hydraulic steering, and a mechanical LSD. None of this nannying nonsense, just drive it....sideways!

TBH, I'd give you a redcard for even considering exchanging an original Emmy for that fat turd. Double redcard if it's one with the S54.

Auto express liked driving it according to you tube. The first z4 was fun when going quickly but rubbish just pottering about. The second model was exactly the opposite. Maybe theyve hit the sweetspot with this one

It doesn't matter material what the roof is, as without one the car is inherently floppy.
And at 1500kg dry, this is not a sports car, it is a sports tourer for someone probably wants to fit golf clubs in the boot.
The problem is, the metal roof has no collapsible storage so where are the club's gonna go?
Softtops can expand the boot space by about a third with the roof up, no such option on a hard top.

I'm calling BS on the Euro spec horsepower.

Why? Well a few reasons:

1. The newly launched X3 M40i has the same engine with 360hp in the UK
2. The current 440i and 340i have 360hp with BMW's M Power, Performance and Sound Kit (remap and exhaust)
3. All information so far supports the new M340i having 380hp as standard when it launches in 2019

This article made me smile. Another journo with absolutely no idea about Z4's, but writes like he has owned various flavours ...

"It's wallowy, doesn't handle, bad roof".

My 35is is as flat as a pancake around corners and had no problem keeping up with a friends modified S2000 on a tight hill climb - of course it's no MX5 but let's give it some credit where credit is due!

I ditched the runflats, stuck on £120 eibach springs and adjusted the camber. Admittedly it does have the adaptive suspension (35iS). Drives at 155+ on the autobahn, solid. 140 with the roof down and tolerable. It's now stage2+ with 430hp+/600nm, has no problem dispatching most things on the road thanks to the DCT gearbox also used in the M3. It does need a proper diff and some M3 suspension parts now to really tighten it up - there's a limit to the E46 rear end of course!

But overall rock solid reliability, despite the N54 worries. This car has been spot on. Not a single thing has gone wrong with the car (3 years/30k miles). Manages 32+ mpg on a run and the roof is the masterpiece of the whole deal for me.

And lets not forget, it costs peanuts compared to some other cars - even brand new.

They still fit through the hole in the centre console. When the roof comes down there's plenty of space under the roof guard.

The car sounds great but a little disappointing we won’t see it until March next year. All the previous articles had suggested a 2018 on sale date frown

Oh well, this looks like another Z4 I won't want!

I've had two 3 litre (E86) Coupes in the last 4 years, but apparently there won't be a BMW Coupe this time! banghead

Longer car with shorter wheelbase doesn't sound like a good starting point - then we get to "settings"! Why not just get it right the first time like the Z4M?

Auto only - not yet thanks I've still got a working left foot. I may need to have an auto in 10 years when I run around in a Honda Jazz (or other mobility appliance), but not just yet! laugh

Please, please, please Toyota make a good Coupe with a manual straight 6!

Playing devils advocate it was always reviewed as a bit wallowy and driven back to back with the previous generation, it wasnt the most dynamic.

As for outright speed anything with 400bhp in a 1500kg shell will be a bit nippy.

Is it really going to be twin turbo ?

Given that the current 40i versions are all twin power B58 motors....single turbo?

Drop in power, still quite heavy, no manual gearbox option, no coupe version. It's not looking particularly great as a sports car really, is it?

of course it will be a great sports car! it will be the japanese version called Supra GR or something that will have all the petrolhead sports car requirements. The Z4 will be the convertible on low pcp payments with the badge image version.

Seems like a very odd justification. So, what you're essentially saying is that, it's defining quality of being a decent sports car, is that it may or may not be offered on cheap finance deals?

? surely it has a roof guard component? you can raise the guard when the roof is up to get all the space but you won't be able to lower the roof.
