As an owner of a 2019 model, it's clear that the demand is still huge (for a 4x4). I've had people offer me £4000 more than I paid for it new in the last couple of months. This isn't something that happens unless there are a lot of people who want to buy the car.

Suzuki took the lowest cost option to get around the emissions issue in Europe, creating the 'commercial' version, which only has minor differences from the previous SZ4 (removing the rear seats, modifying the seat rails and adding a cargo partition). The Jimny and Jimny commercial are effectively the same thing, as the majority of owners run their cars with the rear seats down for the cargo space (I'm an anomaly who dailies mine as a family car).

I doubt that the reason they chose not to re-engineer the car more extensively has anything to do with lack of demand, rather what's achievable with the basic building blocks of the car. With aerodynamics of a brick, it's unlikely that any of Suzuki's current drivetrains would drop CO2 emissions below 95g/km. They would need more than a mild hybrid and the very tight packaging of the Jimny doesn't leave much room for batteries.

I've not seen anyone saying that it was 'the most successful car ever made', it was never going to be a mass seller, it's a niche product within a niche market. Having said that, demand has massively exceeded supply worldwide since launch, that's inarguable. Dealers in the UK, Europe, Aus & NZ all have waiting lists and there has been plenty of dodgy dealer activity with them pre-registering cars to sell on for thousands over list.

The ultimate test of demand is to stick your reg number into westealanycar - even they are quoting above list for a 2 year old car.

I can only assume I have no hope of buying a commercial version either

Sadly I doubt it. Only 500 for the UK this year and Suzuki have had 5000 people register an interest. Most dealers only getting a single car and they're either already sold or being pre-regged and sold at a mark up by the dodgier dealers.

Are they actually that popular? As I can’t remember the last time I saw one on the road and I don’t think I can think of a car I want less IMO.
i saw today funnily enough very small, looks like a shrunken g class, and different to other cars out there i guess, would prefer an actual g class, or ignis, don't think i would pay 20k for one, probably why they are selling so few, the real demand isn't there.
Ok, you don’t want one… which is fine. You’d prefer an Ignis, which is fine too. But many other people think the Jimny looks fantastic. Having said that, I think most car buyers would actually buy an Ignis over a Jimny. It has four doors, is more economical, drives better on road, etc. Which is why Suzuki isn’t bothering much.

What the Jimny has (apart from the off road capability) is cult appeal. There’s a small group of people who really really really want one. And a much smaller group who actually have one, or who are on a waiting list.

I’ve had one for about 18 months now. I waited 14 months for it. Why? I just fell for the styling, I like simple cars, I’ve always fancied a proper off roader, and thought it’d be a sound purchase. It’s fun to drive in a ‘it’s a bit like a st old car’ way; it has character lacking in ‘good’ cars. A bit of me buying it was financial speculation… I thought I’d sell it if demand was strong, and make a few quid. But its character and tiny dimensions means it got under my skin. I’ve also never experienced a car thar generates as much positive attention. Young people. Middle aged. Older. “What is it?! Where can I buy one? Love it!” I bet if they drove it or even saw the boot, they’d change their minds. But hey.

So what about now? Well there are a few on the road, a few thousand or so. And a few more thousand people who want one enough to buy one. Not a huge % of the population, but enough to seriously boost used values. Compounded by the general rise in used car prices. If I do tire of it, I’ll probably do very well out of it. I haven’t yet, and the increasing complexity of ‘normal’ petrol & diesel cars puts me off changing.

What Suzuki has done is created a stir, a bit of a cult car. A booster jet for its brand. The car itself is not mainstream, and never will be. Suzuki knows this.

Well, unbelievably I’ve managed to secure one. I’ve reserved one in white which is due to arrive in a few weeks. I contacted my local dealer who rang me back this morning, i popped in after work with my wife and liked it. I know what to expect with live axles etc, I want one for the looks and the utility aspect, so the van version actually benefits me more but shame it only comes in manual.

The dealer said they are only being allocated three, and there’s no choice of colour, they just get what they are given, luckily white is what I want.

I’ll have to change my username smile

I wouldn't go anywhere near 'cult'.

It's supply and demand.

People who like them because they suit the required- live in certain places in Yorkshire its perfect for winter to get about.

The rest of the year their flaws outweigh the times that they are useful.

I got rid of mine as I didn't like the lack of torque, the indicator on the wrong side and the fact it was really a 2wd car unless you wanted to wind up the gubbins.

The mass market was always outside of Europe.
It is a niche car the market is tiny, no one really cars it is a proper off roader, but other markets outside Europe it will work perfectly.

Sure it won't win any design awards, but i had a look around one while the OH was picking up her Captur and i thought it was alright for the money a brand new one could be had for.

Late Brake Show has some good vids on it. Some of the mods you can get for it seem a lot of fun to build and install. Roof racks, ladder, rack storage etc. He seems to love it anyway

I won’t be able too, I rang up this morning and cancelled it. I’ve only had automatic cars for the last 10 years and the thought of compromising with a manual was eating away at me.

I was worried that once the novelty wore off, I would get tired of it being a manual

What dealer? I've been a curious bystander and could scratch that itch.

I took a bit of a detour on my motorbike today and saw my Jimny on the back of transporter outside the dealership waiting to be unloaded....well, it would have been if the car transporter hadn't shed either its diesel or hydraulic fluid over the road. I spoke to the salesman and the driver was waiting for a technician to arrive. Looks like its going to be Monday for handover. White was a colour I was trying to avoid, but having seen it today I like it!

Seems like a sure fire way of making a few grand for doing absolutely nothing.

yes very odd really, could even run it for 6 months and still sell on at a profit.
