The Metro 6R4 had one of the most distinctive sounds in motorsports , a sort of flat gutterall bark that improved with pops and bangs when turbos were added .
Its the most amazing sound up close it genuinely makes the hairs on the back of the neck stand up, I have been out in practice sessions at Lydden with 6R4's on track with us and the noise as they blast past is incredible.
I have a history with Lydden and have probably marshalled you many times as I did almost every Rallycross meeting from 91 until 2013 in some capacity or other .
The regular Clerk of the course at many of the recent rounds (Andy Stevens) was one of my trainees when he first started .
I was talking to Whitstable Will a couple of months ago , the guy with probably the best 6R4 ever .

Very probably, but you get that at all levels of motorsport so let's not be too hard on them.

I wouldn't really describe the noise as flat or guttural , but more the perfect example of that tuneful howl of other racing V6s. The closest I've heard to it is the divine Ferrari Dino 246 , the Grand Prix car which was the last front engined job to win a GP (not the similarly V6'ed road car which was lovely but not as sonorous.)

Did you ever stand in a forest at night or on the Col and listen to the same engine as fitted in a Lancia Stratos howl through a rally stage....? cloud9

Not en France but seen and heard the mighty Stratos many times back in the day. A simply fab noise but the Ferrari 246 F1 car was even noisier . Which is hardly surprising .

Gotta love these, alongside the R5's and the 205 rivals.
