Actually I think the 5 speed fitted to the Evo 9 GT and RS models is regarded as the 'best' one.....basically the same, but as the name suggests, an 'Evolution' of the previous models.

The Pick of them all for me is the 9GT.....you may say i'm biased as i own one....but i had previously come that conclusion before i bought it. stronger 5 speed box, and stronger mechanical Rear LSD, but loses the AYC, and has a slightly weaker turbo into the deal.

Quick swap of the turbo, and a couple of other supporting mods and your at an easy reliable 400bhp, without the lag suffered by the FQ400, and very little danger that your box and rear diff are near their limits.

To invest, get a Red TME, 8 FQ400, or 9 MR FQ360.....but simply as a car to drive virtually all the other models offer better value, and can easily be modded to be far better than the 'investment' models for very little cash

LOVE Evo’s, having had five to date, I’ve experienced all model variations and not one has left me cold.

They are supremely agile, stupidly quick, even by today’s standards, and that’s 20 years after they were at their peak of popularity, and will put a smile on your face every time.

They’re not refined, the interior is terrible (all 90’s jap cars were) and will eat money in petrol for fun - but FUN is the operative word here.
I have an Evo V now as a weekend toy, and for that purpose, it really is hard to beat! I’ve owned numerous German cars in between my last Evo IX and the current one, and none of them have given me that feeling I wanted from a toy.

The huge surge of torque, the pops and bangs and the amount of attention the car gets when out is unreal. For something created 20 years ago, and sold relatively cheaply, they are an icon on the road!

Depends on your usage, really. I do ~3000 miles a year in mine, so the 4500 interval isn't an issue for me.

+1 on the 9 GT being the one, you get the modern exterior and (slightly) improved interior on the previous models. You also get the stronger 5 speed gearbox, and no AYC.

Now take the rear spoiler off that pearl white one and it's flickin' all my switches!

Ok admit it, how many of us are here from the MLR?
I've had three EVOS and the EVO X was the dog of the lot of them.

Yep, another MLR refugee here, had my 8 for 15 years. Many, many cars have come in and gone out of the garage in that time, the Evo remains, and I expect will do for a very long time.

I barely use it now, so costs aren't really an issue, but I couldn't stand to part with it. It's been a superb car for me.

Isn't it 4500 miles or six months, whichever comes first? I suppose servicing twice a year isn't too bad.

I've just bought a C63 as it was the obvious car to go for next as i thought the evo suited a mid 20's man. My Vi was remapped to 350 brake and i'm not sure if its rose tinted glasses but felt every bit as quick as my current car, then again the current car has 400 kilos on the Evo. I wasnt bothered about the interior, but there were plenty of electric bits for the age of the car - it had a great driving position, pedals nicely spaced. It stopped and accelerated and went aruond corners on rails or sideways depending how how you drove it. I think if I get bored of the C63, i'll get an IX 320 or whatever and remap it up to 400. Non of the german hot hatches have the suspension that suits our b roads, the evo had perfectly damped and sprung suspension, so was firm but wouldnt stutter or skip across the road due to excessive spring/damper rates. Theyre not lathered in ESP and all that nonsense either and who cares about 4500 service intervals and 18mpg - you know what youre getting into if you do your homework and for this performance you'd expect nothing less. Its a shame there wont be another car like it and whilst time goes on those with low milage examples, values will only keep going up, hold on to them and cherish them ! The mpg in this article is also misleading, you'd more likely get 18/22 on a run and 9-13 on razz.

The concern I have with Japanese cars over 10 years old is rust. They tend to suffer poorly especially underneath is areas not obvious.

Not sure how the EVO's stack up in this respect.

Are you hating on the proof reader's abilities or lack thereof? That's their bad. Or more correctly they're bad at their job.

As I understand it this is what passes for copy when written by the new crop of journalists who cannot string a sentence together properly. Some of these young herberts need to understand that it's far better to learn to write properly and check their bloody facts so that they don't look like total morons in front of the world (five doors on a four door saloon...) instead of trying to include trendy phrases that no one who reads this site would ever use.

It makes no difference as nothing ever improves on here, but when I was a kid I grew up reading the likes of Bulgin, Green, Bishop, Bremner etc. Those people wrote genuinely engaging and interesting copy - they were good writers who happened to write about cars. I'd love it if some of the new internet-based crop made even half an attempt to move in that direction.

Yours in frustration,

Exasperated of Tunbridge Wells.

The modern ones go pop on every gear change, the same synthetic pop as the last gear change

I was on the MLR when I bought my 7, back in 2003. Christ, that was a long time ago. Divorce forced the sale of mine in 2005, but to be honest I think I would have ended up either banned or through a hedge backwards at 100 if I'd kept it much longer. I just couldn't help but hit the high boost button on the boost controller and hoof it at every opportunity, which wasn't ideal as it was my daily driver. redface

Most Evos are only used ~6 months of the year anyway, so again, depends on the usage! smile
