Depends on the farm.
Ok, I'll bite smile

What type of farming in modern day Britain involves riding horses on the road?
One which makes part of its money from offering equine activities...

Like the one right next door to me, or the one at the other end of the lane.

You've opened up a can of worms here. Hell hath no fury like a horse rider scorned.

I once rung my bell and overtook a horse rider on my pushbike and got a stern yelling at as I might have scared her horse.. Well get the fking uncontrollable beast off the public highway then if a man on a bicycle might scare the st out of it... And pick up the giant lumps of st you've left all over the road before you get on your merry way...

We have mix near us.

The travellers, who don't care and you can do nothing with them.

Amateur horse riders including younger people, who appear to go out during the evening rush hour.

Just apply some common sense, don't go out on the roads when you know it will be busy.....

Its terrible that other people may want to use the road for purposes other than going fast in a car.

I dont like or understand it, it must be banned !

Like moaning about cycling and cyclists, you may as well bark at the moon, nobody is going to ban it, best we can hope for is Horse riders to be courteous and safety conscious and we offer them the same consideration.

It is disproportionate the amount of moaning about horses and bicycles, most of the agro is down to cars.

1 minute delay due to Dobbin or other "Mammil", abject rage, hits back of a queue of cars and will wait happily for ages like as stunned mullet listening to the radio, happy as a pig in st.

So, not actually farming then, more of a side business, like caravan storage smile

Lots of things are allowed to happen on the road

Some horse riders are worse road users than others

Some cyclists are worse road users than others

Some truck drivers are worse road users than others

Some bus drivers are worse road users than others

Some motorcyclists are worse road users than others

Some van drivers are worse road users than others

Are you seeing the pattern yet?

Car drivers, like OP, are perfect road users. Always.

Tick as appropriate

Because you bought:

The new build with the all the glass overlooking fields
or
The idyllic old cottage that was for sale on Strutt & Parker

Your commute to the train station is too far despite S&P saying it was a 20min commute to the station
or
You don't get up early enough in the morning

When purchasing your new house you did not notice the horse warning triangle sign in the hedge, it is there you need to look for it.

You came from a town with new build estates, 30 limits, road signs, street lights & traffic lights.
&
Your have much experience of the countryside having been to center parcs many times

You've not yet the 30 ton tractor on the road harvesting at 5am when you do get up early enough

You rent an Audi/BMW for the miss's

You have a company car & you hate it getting covered in farm crud (wait till winter!)

I await the honest reply

You seem to have a definition of "farming" which inherently excludes anything horseish.

Yes i do, because farms don't use horses.
People who own farms might also own horses though. i will give you that smile

The townies are strong on this one !
Most go down the road , never see the view .
Most go down the road , never smell the fresh air .
Most go down the road and think nothing happens out in the countryside.
They will probably have a fit if they ever come across livestock being herded along the lanes , how about the duck and her young ?
Chill out breath and recharge .
If you cannot cope , get back into the towns and cities and the rat race . They run to a different tune in the country .

Imagine trying to get a vehicle road legal and MOTd that has the following traits when it "gets a bit spooked"

A. changes direction ignoring the riders input

B. speeds up / slows down randomly ignoring the riders input

C. drops un-burnt fuel on the road in big piles / puddles

D. goes everywhere on roads at about 8mph unless in modes A/B above. biggrin

Good luck to them, I like to be in total control of where I'm heading, the thought of it being taken away because my steed has seen someone in a yellow t-shirt walking along isn't my idea of fun.

I'm dreading the day I round a corner on my 2 stroke and see some horses, despite my best efforts to make it quiet it's still not the best sounding thing, not loud but well, just a 2 stroke, think I might have to just hit the kill switch and coast past, but not too fast in case dobbin throws a wobbler and crushes me to death. Probably best to just make a U-turn and go back!

I'll always remember being in a friends car crawling past a horse on a country lane. The horse shimmied a good 10 foot sideways over the road in to our lane and put a great hoof mark in to the passenger door. Upon stopping and talking to the horse rider they just claimed it wasn't their fault and refused to give any details for making an insurance claim. It was a nail of a car so he just filed the dent with bog and sprayed it over with a non matched Halfords can in a fantastic orange peel finish, replete with masking tape lines. I preferred the hoof mark myself.

I've also seen someone overtake a horse after me, at the same speed (about 15mph) and the horse has gone mental and taken off down the road in the other direction at speed! F**k that noise!

I live in the countryside, always have done, yet I have to agree with the OP in that horses no longer have any place on the public highway.
I can't ride a segway, or an electric scooter on the road, yet apparently a horse that might jump about at any sign of a noise is fine?

The only reason they're still allowed in reality is that the people that ride/keep/own them are the people that are in power!

Of course horses on the road should be banned. Allowing horses on the road because they were "here before cars" is like allowing throwing faeces out the window because this used to be the case before plumbing. It's dangerous, unnecessary, annoying, and selfish.

Nobody uses a horse to get about for genuine reasons (like commuting, working, or travelling). People who do do it only because they have a horse and therefore they can, so they put their own leisure above the danger or inconvenience they cause to other users. You can't compare a horse to a bicycle or a motorbike, because these are not only much less of a hazard for other road users, but are also genuine means of transport in addition to being a recreation vehicle. If you have a horse, you can ride it anywhere, it doesn't have to be a public road. Why people choose to go on the road is beyond me.

Something needs to change.

I've yet to read a good argument for the continued accomodation in law for horses on the road.

Whenever the question is asked, the response never seems have any more substance than sarcasm, irrelevant counter questions and appeals to other road users to be accomodating.
