I don’t have a problem with people driving in them.

It’s grown men walking about in them that I’d like a crackdown on hehe
This.

Not sure what's worse, flip-flops (the name says it all) or Crocs.
Yep. Blokes wearing flip-flops is a sure sign they're a wker. Except possibly on a beach.

Well I'll take note when we get annexed by Spain, otherwise jog on.

In some cars you can put the pedal in-between your flip-flop and toes creating a rudimentary cruise control, doesn't work in BMW's, but they've basically all got cruise anyway

First story I thought of when I saw this thread, and I'm not sure this post got the appreciation it deserved. Yes, speed was also a factor, but a flip-flop should never be an appropriate choice of footwear when you could put other people's lives at risk.

Flip flops are as fine for driving as is steering with ones knees. It all works fairly ok until you need to react quickly to a hazard and your flip flop gets caught under one of the pedals. Bare foot driving is stupid too because you won't be able to apply same amount of pressure on the brake in case of emergency. Try one or the other in places where traffic police still exists, like Germany.

I always take mine off and drive barefoot, might look like I'm driving in them when I get out of the car but I'm not. Always push them back towards my seat once I get in

I usually go barefoot if wearing flip flops.

Regarding some of the points above...

Getting stuck under the brake pedal is highly unlikely as the pedal never gets anywhere near the floor.

Lack of force with bare feet is also a load of tosh. For regulatory tests the force is limited to 500 N. Which is easy to apply with bare feet. 3-400 N will be enough to activate ABS in most cars.

Ha! No, I mean I take them off to drive, as others have said above.

Not sure if socks and flip flops would even be possible unless your socks had individual toes!

I might get out my car in flip flops...but I take them off to drive. They tend to flop about in the pedal box and get in the way of themselves so best to just take them off.

Aside from the fact it is never hot enough in the UK to justify flip flops, I have driven bare feet for very short distances and found it rather difficult. Your brain is used to the feel through shoes and even though you are technically in closer contact with the pedal, it just feels very odd.
Barefoot is actually the most comfortable way to drive in my Abarth. That is as much to do with the awful pedal setup mind. I don't have to work against the stiffness of the shoe to crane feet onto the pedals.

Different stroek8and all that....I find barefoot driving entirely transparent and natural feeling. It's nice on a hot day to have the footwell blower on. Cool AC air on the toes. Lovely.

I was rear ended by a woman in flip flops once, she slipped off the brake in traffic, so it was a slow shunt, but still, I'm against people wearing them while driving from my experience.

Yes because flip flops are known for their on foot stability meaning 99.999999% of the time it will be where you expect it to be, hence it's highly unlikely to cause issues in an emergency situation.

I kick the flip flops under the seat and drive in bare feet. It is apparently illegal to do either, in Spain but I see no issue with bare feet.
Me too... great fuel saver too as bare footed is far gentler!

Justify? Why would you need to justify wearing them? Also not sure where abouts you live, but I have had many sunny days in the UK where its hot enough for me to justify wearing them.

We were on a driving holiday a couple of years ago when the driver of a Ferrari F12 totalled his car down a cliff. Afterwards I remembered he had been driving in Birkenstocks. Not saying that this was contributory but I would never had done that in our Smart Brabus, never mind an F12. He was OK but his passenger had to be airlifted to hospital.
