Yes it is.

But this has a hatch. I could put a dog in it.

So you took advantage of Audi pumping a car that suites your needs for next to f all. Seems sensible.

S4 is as much a leasers car as a Golf R.

Yes. What was your point re the leasers' dream? If you want one and can afford the payments so bloody what?

I will never understand this weird obsession with the number of exhaust pipes a car has.

It's a mind-numbingly dull thing to be bothered by.
Why? I agree with him. 4 pipes on a 2.0L family hatch? It's stupid. I'm sure there are other styling issues that bother you about cars so what's different about the exhausts?
+1 if I get one I`d put an aftermarket exhaust similar to the twin pipes on m135/40
I'm with the other guy. I wouldn't care about it. Yes, it would probably look better with two, but I can't say it bothers me that it has four. Certainly wouldn't bother spending any extra on it.

Which is the same I'd say for this expensive exhaust. A bunch of cash on a daft exhaust which will make you look like a dick. The best thing about the golf is it looks just like a golf and doesn't attract attention.

Can you get a mountain bike in the back with the seats down? Whole, or front wheel off?

to me that`s why I don`t like the four pipes, even the twin pipes I mentioned earlier would still be a bit much, a single sided twin pipe design would be more fitting to a Golf, four is just too much (again IMO)

I had a manual R for two years, and did try the DSG version too. Maybe I’m just too old because I prefer a manual.

Now we a diesel SQ5 plus with paddles, and it’s bloody fast, but not as much fun as my manual Up GTi.

I bloody hope that VW do a manual of the mk8 R when it comes along next year - ans they rethink a PP option on it.

Or maybe soon i’ll get so old that I can only cope with a DSG / slushbox!

Haha, though you were doling out the same old cliches. Hardly surprising I would come to that conclusion given we’re on PH. My bad.

I've just had a standard Golf R delivered with 18"s. The car is nicely understated but have to say I'm not keen on the over-styled pipes, and whilst I like the 18 Cadiz in terms of ride quality - I think they look hideous. The pipes don;t really bother me but would prefer those on the GTD. Not interested in the PP either, the car is capable & fast enough for UK roads.

Cheapest car I've had for 12 years or so... and it's the most fun also. I read the reviews prior to ordering and didn't get the hype & praise the R was attracting, I just thought it;s a Golf, what's the big deal

The R takes me back to the 80s and enjoyment of my R 5 GT Turbo / Pug 205 1.9 GTI.

On another note & reply to one of the posts, why consider buying... to lose 16 grand over 24 months when I can lose only 7.5K by leasing?! Why this simple arithmetic needs to be explained in vivid detail to friends of mine I'll never know.

I'm trying to comprehend & decipher the text you've typed without having to read it twice. I can't do it....... I'm beginning to realise what PH is in comparison to the usual haunt.

Vw haven’t subsidised the golf 7.5 r anything like they did with the 7 hence nowhere near the number of good lease deals

Sounds like value wise, it's the opposite of the perf pack on GTI. It's a no brainer there, couple of horses more but essentially the VAQ diff and and handfull of usefull options most would have specced anyway.

Good news regarding the brake discs though. Look like they are the Clubsport S type so should fit on PP GTI. Getting those out on another model means less chance of a huge premium in the parts dept later on. Should make a nice little upgrade for those chasing unsprung weight. If I keep my GTI long enough I think I'll look at those when the time comes.

PS: not that it matters, but IMVHO the exhausts look over the top. Same on the GTI, no funtional requirement for 2 pipes there, and the chrome thing they stick on to make them look bigger... I'll paint mine black when I have a chance... Not that any of this would keep me from buying the thing if else interested. Most reviews get the fast Golfs right I think -- bit boring, but very good at pretty much everything. Which is nice as a daily driver.

Performance Pack and Exhaust on the 7.5R is a waste of money.

For starters if you spec the PP you can’t even have the nice lightweight forged Pretoria wheels. You get heavy daft looking things called Spielberg’s.

Personally i’d buy the car without the packs.

I would then pay my £300 for the Clubsport discs (which are front only).

I’d buy the Akra exhaust from Awesome where it’s 2.5k so cheaper than from VW themselves!!

The performance pack is £2300 and the exhaust is £2999.

Doing this will save a bit of money, which Keeps the list price down for lower annual VED. It also gives you the only benefit of the PP which is the brakes. The spoiler is awful, the speed de-limiter is pointless and those wheels are shocking.
