The 8 Series should look like some fantasy BMW - the one to aspire to.
This just looks like an enlarged version of the rest.

Looks nice, but HUGE.
Shorter than the outgoing 6 series and it's a luxury GT car so was never going to be small. Fortunately for you though they do offer smaller coupe cars in the form of the 4 series or 2 series if the 8 series is too big for your needs. Having spent a lot of time with the outgoing M6 I really didn't find that too big so the 8 wouldn't be a problem in my opinion.

They wouldn't budge even though I had their loan car and left the 7 at Park Lane. Lawyers involved. It was only when I had the idea of calling the previous owner, did something happen. He was a funny fruit. I suppose he signed a NDA. He told me 'can't talk about it, sorry' which only increased my suspicion. I pleaded with him! He said ok 'you ask the questions and i'm only saying yes or no'. OK 'Did you own XXreg 745. YES! Do you still own a 745. YES. Was it a free exchange. YES smile

I advised BMW that I'd caught them out, selling a car they knew to be defective. They immediately capitulated.

The crazy part being, you would think BMW would take the car away and rip it apart to find out what the hell was wrong with it. Improve processes. No, it was back on the forecourt. Some other poor sod got stuck with it
Just reinforces a belief that a fair percentage of salespeople have to have some latent sociopathic tendencies. I can only imagine a company like BMW has a staff code of conduct, of ethics etc. But you must be on some part of the sociopathic spectrum to have to wait until a trigger word like ‘missold’ is used to then flip position and start doing the right thing. Leaves a sour taste.

But well done, a cautionary tale I’ll remember.

The lesson learn't is ALWAYS get the warranty work history on a used car. Even if it's virtually new and from a franchise dealer. Dealers can redact it so don't fall for the 'data protection' BS. If you can't see the cars history, walk.

Indeed a handsome car, the E38. My brother ran a 740 also. Cost a fortune in repairs. Lovely car. He still has & series. I gave up after a rotten 745 bangle job smile

(pic not mine, off the internet)

Only ever let me down once. Came out of Heathrow, one of the last flights landing for the day had car parked in short term. Small fortune - eye watering bill in fact! - it cost me as I was asked to stay longer than originally planned. It’s like 1am, on the M4, and just as it segues from motorway to dual carriageway the thing dies!

The dreaded fuel tank affliction....the only real weak spot of the design where someone in Munich had decided that was the best cost cut. Bonkers. But that’s fully depreciated barging for you. Rough with the smooth, and I can laugh about it now (£1k to fix or something) but think it just drives an appreciation of the snazzier cars if you’re lucky enough to get into them! smile

I liked the E65, but they can be brutal. Lovely up front though. It’s like sitting on the bridge of a Moonen yacht!
Here's mine. 96 740i with the non-VANOS 4.4 - a lovely beast. Navarra Violet exterior on lavender grey/aubergine leather.

Not the best pic in the world unfortunately, it's the only one on this PC. It's in good shape but his a few cosmetic blemishes to sort out.

Lovely and fairly - I guess - unique colour combo! Like “BMW alley” there smile

Nice collection.

Personally don't think those E65 wheels suit the E38 at all.

I've had both an E38 and an E65, from a perspective of which is the better car, the E65 has it absolutely licked IMO. They are more pricey to run though, and looks can be....divisive!

The E38 is a pinnacle of tasteful design, one of the best proportioned cars of the last halfa century at least.
Comparing other cars to it is simply not fair.
