RE: New "dream car" BMW 8 Series unveiled
Discussion
Personal opinion of course, but this is another BMW I don’t like the styling of. The crux of it for me is the relationship between the rear wheel / glasshouse.
The 2 series & this both have a large expanse of bodywork from the top of the arch to the bottom of the window. It just ruins the proportions in my opinion. Previous 6 series is OK, the 4 series ‘just’ meets expectations.
The 1M and the E92 were fantastic in this regard, even though the e92 is actually quite big here, the swage line breaks it up & so it ‘works’.
Hell, even my Bangle monstrosities get this bit right (for me)
I don’t have 1M pics as I don’t own one. However as the Mustang is alluded to above, that does work for me in this regard, so here’s one of the rental I had in the US last year. It might be a large mass of bodywork, but there’s not enough window above it to make it look heavy in my opinion.
I hope you can see what I’m getting at...
Finally, a word on performance. I don’t do traffic light GP’s, but such is the relentless progress of technology, that you can guarantee that 90/100, the 40D version of this would beat my M6 off the line. No special skill (or SMG to wrangle) required, just plant your foot. Impressive, but somewhat sad in terms of driver involvement. I know it’s not a new thing, Tesla, etc, but it does make me wonder what the future will bring, and not in a ‘good for the enthusiast who likes driving’ way.

How, HOW, can these highlighted areas get signed off?
Lights ok with exhausts but not with the middle bit. Far too fussy.Too much heft / metal over rear arches makes glasshouse look overly small for the body.
Biggest problem for me is the height of the bonnet. Yes, it's due EU regs but come on, you can disguise it with better design.
Opportunity missed for me.
Front end looks like a Mustang, no worries there. Rear end is confusing and clearly following Japanese design styles. Interior looks good. Lets see if they do a refresh in three years time....then I shall be more interested. Will wait and see what the M version is, a twin turbo 4.4 maybe? 700 BHP and huge torque, but please no exhaust microphones!!
