I must be seriously out of touch with new car prices, but, £25k for a Polo?
And white paint is a £340 option now?

Just another overpriced VW yawn fest, bringing nothing new to the table. As another poster above said, it’s all much the same across the range, switch gear, seats, etc. I don’t see any innovation in the VW range for a long long time. Having sat in a Tesla yesterday it really shows how fast they are catching up in terms of switch gear quality and design, not to mention the rest of the car.

If you absolutely must have a new car then it seems there are now plenty of other options more deserving of your money.

The Polo has pretty much the same specification as a Mk5 Golf GTI - so one could save some cash and buy one of those instead!
What an odd comment.... This can be applied to loads of brand new cars but people in the market for a brand new car don't want to buy a 12 year old golf
My point was merely that on paper they are very similar!

This is what I’ve never understood about the Polo, both this and the previous generation. Add the options that take it to the same level as a Golf GTI, and it er, costs the same as a Golf GTI. It makes no sense.

As for this latest incarnation, I don’t care how good or bad it is, that front end is terrible. I got a lift in a non-GTI Polo a few weeks ago, and like others have pointed out, it’s similar in size to a MK5/6 Golf, but feels a fair bit smaller than the MK7.

Exactly! Utterly baffling comment. It's almost as if people who post these sort of things expect the manufacturers to price their vehicles the same as older, 2nd hand cars confused

If you took the badges off and didn’t put them side by side I think I would struggle to tell you which one was which.

If they are similar sizes and similar weights it sort of defeats the purpose of having two models. Bought a Polo GTi for my wife about 8 years back and key point for her was it was a small car.
The 2 cars look incredibly similar from the front and the differences are subtle. The rear, it's quite obvious there is a difference.

Having said that....look at the Mk1 Golf vs Mk1 Polo and tell me the new ones looking the same is something new.Oh, and the Polo is smaller than the Golf (your post suggests it's not, or certainly no noticeable difference).

Except one is new with a warranty and the other has been through a number of careless owners and possibly clocked.

Every single time a new car is posted up someone always tells us the fking obvious that you can buy a used car for the same price. Then why stop at a Golf, lets buy a used Porsche but ignore that they attract a completely different customer profile.

Argh, bloody hell! I wish I hadn't said the second part of my comment now - ignore it. I was just saying that a particular older Golf model has very very similar specs to the new Polo.

Wonder what the Polo would be like with a Quaife ATB LSD, and a decent power increase from someone like Revo? If you don't need the bigger body then there's quite a lot of cash to play with ... 300bhp should do nicely.

I’ve got a new family estate but was looking for a 4wd saloon with a Turbo and nearly pulled the trigger on a new lease car but instead spent £400 on a 248k Audi A4 B5 1.8 Turbo Quattro Sport.
Those were pretty good actually. Not sure 4wd is going to help you much in the snow in terms of lateral grip and braking though.

Anyone know how VW has gone about ‘detuning’ The golfs engine to fit it into the polo. Is it materially different spec wise?

What I’m wondering is, will it be easy for the various tuners to effectively release the additional power out of it to make it match the golf or will there be lots of parts that need to be changed / added.

Has anyone compared the performance of both to a BMW 3-Series diesel yet and told us they're both slower?
We'd have the full house then!! smile

Not sure why anyone would buy a new Golf GTI when for less money one could have one of these

Same story for the Up GTi.
It was 37 weeks when I looked a couple of months ago. Couldn't be bothered with that, will look at a SSS or a fiesta when I get some more time.

Also, the Up GTi comes with heated seats as standard, at 10k less than the Polo. That's an odd spec comparison!

My favourite hot hatch out there right now is the Hyundai i30N. As a result I'm only really curious about these two rather than invested.

But until the end of the article, I thought the white one was the Golf and the red one was the Polo. It suddenly clicked that I was wrong when I looked through the pictures more closely and saw the white one had a slightly unfamiliar side profile

They've ensured the Polo always is in front of the Golf so it always looks the bigger car

Price on the Polo just seems a bit daft to me, like they're charging 208 Peugeot Sport money for Fiesta ST 1 specs, almost. I'd accuse them of badge tax, but the Up gti and Golf R both seem very price competitive.

I am surprised nobody , not even the author has commented on where in the rev range that polo makes peak power

It is mentioned at the bottom of the article

Power (hp): 200@4,400-6,000rpm
Torque (lb ft): 236@1,500-4,400rpm
