Exactly! Utterly baffling comment. It's almost as if people who post these sort of things expect the manufacturers to price their vehicles the same as older, 2nd hand cars
Um no. But I do think it's not unreasonable to expect a fair bit of clean air between the ten year old car one already owns and the brand new car they want to flog for a rather substantial sum in terms of the overall experience. Otherwise - why bother? Cars don't tend to fall apart after X years anymore (at least not when properly maintained), not even VAG products... Brand new car
Three year warranty
More safety equipment
More efficient
Cleaner
Bigger
If you dont want bigger then i dont think they'll stop you buying a Polo....
Not sure I understand why people are saying that they can't tell the difference between the two, as they look very different in my eyes. The Golf is still a handsome car, while the Polo looks slightly awkward from some angles.
It seems a strange one this. While most other cars in the segment are going for the 'relatively light, <1.6-turbo' approach, VW appear to have gone for 'big engine, big weight'. It will undoubtedly appeal to some, but I can't see it selling in big numbers. The Polo GTI always seems to have struggled against the opposition and I suspect this will be the same.

This is what I’ve never understood about the Polo, both this and the previous generation. Add the options that take it to the same level as a Golf GTI, and it er, costs the same as a Golf GTI. It makes no sense.
How did you work that out?5 door DSG Golf GTI base price is £30,275
5 door DSG Polo GTI price including options to Golf GTI spec is £24,630
20% more is not the same in my book.
Options added were: Adaptive cruise control (ACC), Climate control electronic, Discover Navigation system, LED headlights, Electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors foldable with lowering front passenger function, Car-net 'App-Connect' with Media Control, Park assist inc. sensors

Though I wonder if smiles per pound the Up GTI is the pick of the set? As a 3 door it looks brilliant and it will be possible to drive enthusiastically far more of the time than the other two.
I think the big difference is the Polo is now big enough to function as a family car. I have an Up GTI coming in a few months, but I'll only use it for commuting, our R estate will fulfil family duties. I can bet I know which will be more fun though!VW never seem to have put the same effort into a Polo GTI as they have the Golf. Not sure why, maybe they don't want it treading on its big brother's toes. They just seem to lack the determination or resolve to make it a class leading car. As a result its always pretty good, rather than outstanding.
I don't know why anyone would take a Polo GTI over a Fiesta ST. The Golf GTI however ticks most boxes in the full fat hot hatch category, although there are tons more Golf GTDs around than GTIs, even post dieselgate. For me, the best two car VW garage would be an UP GTI and a GOLF R estate.

I had the previous version in 1.4TSI form and in my opinion (when it wasn't broken down) it was a better car than the Golf. Negligible internal size difference apart from the boot, but in a smaller nippier shell. It felt as quick in real terms was cheaper to run and insure which all meant, certainly for urban motoring it was a better prospect. As well as the fact that they were as rare as rocking horse doo doo and every other person had a Golf GTI. People less interested in cars thought it was a Golf anyway.
To put a 2 litre in a Polo sort of defeats the purpose for me. A Polo should be small and light but I suppose that's the Up now.
They might as well have given it the S1 platform used the Golf engine in full fat mode and turned it into a Polo R which was the car that was rumoured a few years ago which I was waiting for.
Mind you that would even more degrade the brand image of the Golf GTI which has already been attacked by the cheap deals on the Golf R.

Really? To answer your question, all you need to do is ask why the Golf GTI is so popular. If you can see the Golf's appeal, who not the Polo's? It's basically the same car but in the smaller segment below. It even shares the exact same engine now.I don't know why anyone would take a Polo GTI over a Fiesta ST. I love the Fiesta ST but i can certainly see why some wouldn't enjoy it. The Polo GTI has that all-rounder appeal that suits some people down to the ground. The Fiesta is the most fun in the segment but does compromise itself in other areas.

Polo has a handbrake. Winner for me.
I've never used a VW electric handbrake, just BMWs, Jags, Audis, Peugeots and Mercs.....I'm not sure if the VW is any worse than any of those, but I can't see why you'd want a manual one!!Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
