I've never used a VW electric handbrake, just BMWs, Jags, Audis, Peugeots and Mercs.....I'm not sure if the VW is any worse than any of those, but I can't see why you'd want a manual one!!
i had one on my previous A4 and it was great. It makes the manual handbrake completely redundant for me, after experiencing it.Unless you wanna be doing loads of handbrake turns, it's pretty pointless really.

I'd one on my Passat and we've one on our Merc. Very handy and great that it auto applie the handbrake when you switch the car off (or in the case of the Passat when you knock the car out of gear). Really miss it on my Cooper S.

Quite concerned that when my Up GTI turns up I'm going to end up leaving the handbrake off!

Come to a stop, take foot off the brake and it applies the handbrake so the car doesn't creep forwards. Put foot on accelerator and it disengages the handbrake and you set off.
Why would any dislike that? I genuinely don't understand.

The one on my E65 7 series was really good.

That Passat was like that (only manual so needed to disengage clutch), also it applied the handbrake as soon as the car was switched off - the Mercedes doesnt do it until you open the door, which can be disconcerting.

We're having a logical discussion about the merits about the electronic handbrake and you start talking about fertility in Essex?
Please grow up

Price on the Polo just seems a bit daft to me, like they're charging 208 Peugeot Sport money for Fiesta ST 1 specs, almost. I'd accuse them of badge tax, but the Up gti and Golf R both seem very price competitive.
Dunno about real street prices for UK, but imagine these will come down in half a year or so after the initial demand has been fulfilled. In defense of the Polo I think it should be made clear the thing isn't trying to compete with the 208 or ST. This is the sensible pants hot hatch in VW's line up. Miller cycle engine gives it a somewhat diesel like power characteristic, size and MQB platform make it only a bit lighter than the Golf 7.
On the plus side the thing will have top level ergonomics, very good usability, enough space to be used as a daily for most and pretty convincing efficiency. It's just a very sensible car that comes with a bit of easy to explore driving fun thanks to the 200 ponies. Perfect company car for example, or daily for someone that isn't image/size conscious and just wants something cheap to run and fun at the same time.

They probably are charging a badge tax because they can get away with it. Seems perfectly reasonable to me as BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Jaguar, Landrover etc. all do exactly the same.A four cylinder 3 series etc isn't that much better than an Insignia, Mondeo, Superb, Passat or Mazda but it's an awful lot more expensive.
But I agree VW's pricing veers between reasonable and silly so there isn't that much consistency in there.
