I'm a big fan of the current S1 and I also prefer a 3dr to a 5dr even though I've got two kids. 3dr cars are certainly dying off sadly, but I do understand why most prefer the ease of the rear doors.

They still look the same as focus st wheels though regardless wink

Love my current Audi S1 which is my daily hack. Only thing I don’t like is the very limited space in the rear and boot which the new car should address.

Hopefully it will look better in the flesh compared with those pics.

The trouble with so many brands being in the VAG stable is enforced non-competition. I'd want this S1 to be a fire-breathing alternative to the Golf-R but that's the remit of the S3 so it won't happen.

Damn shame about the lack of 3-door too. I much prefer the aesthetics of a 3-door and can live with the reduced practicality. Which is why I have a 3-door Golf-R, of course. smile

I really want to find a decent hot hatch, but most seem to be heavy and over powered.
You'd have to go a long way to beat the Suzuki Swift Sport, although the latest Mk3 isn't the bargain that previous versions were, so its shortcomings are less easy to overlook. But apparently it has still managed to retain at least some of previous models sense of "fun at sensible speeds".

I think it has a look of Hyundai Kona about it?

This.

It's actually quite some achievement to make a car look both boring yet overly styled all at the same time!
I second this. It is suffering from styling noise.

I like the styling, for an ‘s1’ it shows some flare even if this isn’t audis roots of keeping it lowkey.

But this 2.0 in vavious tunes is getting tedious, essentially this engine has been going for years, since the golf mk5 gti or even ealier maybe, this is the main reason i think people are getting bored of hot vag (lol) stuff I think.

A hevily boosted 3 pot turbo would add more charcter imo

Edit to add. Even throw in some turbo lag for a bit of fun and charcter, even though it can be close to eliminated now

Same tacky wheels as the polo gti , but has this consistent meaning about no 3dr option become the new PistonHeads std go to reaction. Who actually cares if it’s a 5 door , Audi have obviously looked at the buying figures plus it’s cheaper on a tooling front etc

Me too. A friend of mine also loves his Megane RS Trophy and he won't swap his for the new one because its 5dr only. Not everyone wants a car that looks like a Taxi.

I must have faulty eyes then cause clearly the new Megane RS 5dr certainly doesn’t look like a taxi , so if they are not making a 3dr then just simply look for something else ?

All 5dr cars look like Taxis to me but appreciate that's my personal thing. I get why manufacturers are dropping the 3dr cars because they just don't sell if a 5dr is offered as well.

Oh, I can certainly see the economics of only having a 5-door. I just have a personal preference for 3-door models.

I always have as well. Even my old 640d Coupe was outsold by the 4dr Gran Coupe...it seems nobody likes the 3dr shape anymore.

Not wanting to sound like i’m having a go here, but this attitude is the whole reason we get such overbloated cars now. Saw a new fiesta the other day its like the same size as a mk5 vw golf! If you wanted more space why didn’t you get the audi a3?! Every car at every generation almost goes up a class size now to add more room and space inside to beat competitors, the end result of that is we’ll eventually get an a1 the size of an a4 ffs!

It's certainly true that the current Polo is the size of what used to be called a Golf. yes

What car manufacturers tend to do there is slip a new smaller model in underneath - the Fox, the Up!, etc.

Audi have a bit of a problem on their hands though as their naming convention doesn't allow it. They could make an A0, I guess, but after that then what?

You could always buy an S3, non, or a Transit?

It's a proper shame that they've done away with the 3 door. I always thought the old A1 looked a bit ridiculous as a 5 door - as if the car had been designed with 3 doors in mind only - they were like an afterthought. My old S1 was a 3 door and I preferred the looks immeasurably over the Sportback.

Speaking of which, cracking car, miss it a lot actually. I have a horrible feeling that the new one will be DSG only - the old car was not a big seller and I'm sure this is one of the reasons why!
