RE: Abt creates 186mph RS3
Discussion
What this car needs is a single exhaust, a 1.4 TFSi badge on the back, 17" alloys and no spoilers.
Then go out and do some Porsche-baiting.
I remember hearing a story some years ago about a journalist driving along the autobahn in a de-restricted BMW M3. Bimbling along at about 85, what appeared to be a cooking version grey VW Passat estate came up behind him and flashed the headlights.
Said journalist thought he'd teach Mr grey Passat estate driver a lesson and floored the throttle.
At 160mph, the Passat flashed him again, and he moved over and watched this Passat come past him as if he was driving a milk float.
The Passat was an Audi skunkworks car fitted with a group B rally engine putting out about 600bhp!!
Now that would be a great Q car to cruise around in.

Is this 186mph a theoretical top speed or is the car actually geared to get that far?
It could have 10,000 bhp but if it's geared to a max of 155mph at a rev point where the engine doesn't consume itself, that's how fast it will go.
I have the current S3 with 7 speed DSG and can confirm it is nowhere near the limit at 155mph.It could have 10,000 bhp but if it's geared to a max of 155mph at a rev point where the engine doesn't consume itself, that's how fast it will go.
I believe the gearbox is also remapped along with the ECU to make best use of the additional power.

With all this top speed talk …. would anyone actually buy one for UK road use ?
In fairness, a measurable number of people bought the Insignia VXR Supersport in the UK, which had the speed limiter raised from 155 to 168mph (and blue brake callipers, very important...) The always-accurate-and-not-at-all-flawed "howmanyleft.co.uk" points to at least 262 manuals and 49 autos. No idea how many Insignia OPC Unlimiteds were sold overseas.
Alas they don't seem to make any Vauxhall VXRs now, including the VXR8... stting Peugeot.

geared to 202mph iirc
No, geared for 245mph at the red line (7000rpm) according to the info here (doing the maths):http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-reviews/95570/bmw...
"rpm at 70mph - 2,000rpm"
It wouldn't surprise me if some 8 and 9 speed automatics were geared for a theoretical top speed of 300+mph.

I think the standard RS3's 2 oval rear pipes look better than the 4 pipe system. S3 has 4 pipe exhaust system as standard, maybe ABT are claiming it looks more stealthy with 4 exhausts !
In reality they are actually quad exhausts. There are 2 pipes in each oval. Same with the rs4 and rs6

I don't think I have ever even heard of a stock car running out of revs limiting the top speed, i'm pretty sure the RS3 speedo goes to 200 mph.It could have 10,000 bhp but if it's geared to a max of 155mph at a rev point where the engine doesn't consume itself, that's how fast it will go.
