Re: The silver E39 touring for sale that was discussed a few pages back (I’m selling it)...

Loads of interest, but so far only really from people wanting a cheap old estate. A couple of questions for the thread populous:

1. Am I pricing it too high?
2. Should I be drawn to the hell of eBay?
3. Am I wrong for only really wanting to sell it to someone I think would actually appreciate it?

Help.
You've only had the ad up for a week or so I think ? So lots of interest is good so far !
You could put an ad on Ebay for sure, put a classified ad on there doesn't have to be an auction.
Price doesn't seem bad, slightly interested myself as wanted an estate or an mpv for camping. Prefer a diesel for extended touring so a bigger petrol might not be for me.

I'd hang in there a bit longer...….

It is a cheap old estate. So is mine. The vast amount of money I've sunk into it over the years doesn't change that.

1. Not as far as I can see (well within "cheap old estate" territory)
2. A lot of people seem to do very good transactions on eBay, including threadists, so where's the hell?
3. Not if that's what you want to do, it's entirely a matter for you. I would be that way with mine. If I could get £500 more from
someone who was going to drive into a wall, I would forego the £500. If they offered me £5,000 more than a threadist, I would have to overcome my grief but woud find it upsetting. If they offered me £10,000 over the odds I'd have their arm off. Your feelings (and relevant thresholds) may differ.

Has anybody else seen the collection of 5 series cars that are for sale by GSM Cars in the classifieds ? They appear to have a lot of very low mileage cars some with only 2,500 miles on them ? Must be a story behind them or have they just watched the classifieds and got all the low mileage ones ?
GMS , you mean. I'm sure they are making a very strong effort to hoover up all the remaining minters, and I think they are probably also bringing cars in from Japan. There seems to be quite a supply of European cars barely driven in Japan.

What could be wrong with an E39 535 auto that says:

"goes into reverse gear but struggles up hill for some reason, all forward gears are fine."

Something simple or replacement box? Assume the vendor has taken some sort of advice and has priced it at 800 for a reason.

Edited by Croutons on Tuesday 21st August 08:23
V8’s use the ZF ‘box, and struggling in reverse is the first sign of failure unfortunately.
True. Doesn't make it a bad buy as a cheapie if everything else is good - no rot, good interior etc - and it's something you would want to keep for a few years. Just price up a transmission replacement at your nearest reputable auto transmission specialist, then bid the guy hard.

Early aaaaaargh-drive. Not in a million years.

S211 are not without their annoyances, but I think they're twice the car that is.
I had an early E60 and once you figure out you can hold the idrive in one of the four directions as a shortcut to a menu it isn’t ‘that’ bad.

What I disliked more was how spartan and low-rent it made the interior feel with so many buttons gone having previously had the gentlemen’s club interior of an E39.

The E39 is much more handsome too imo.

Now that's an ace car. Brilliant fun, these, and absolutely zero maintenance required, ever. Ever.

Your pictures are small and crummy looking, you need a nice location, clean car and good angles (search E39 touring on google and copy the best angles). The parked on the grass look says "unloved" which is clearly not the case.

It is a cheap estate and as with all cheap cars you will get bid in the nuts for a while before a serious buyer comes along. eBay classifieds has always worked for me eventually, nothing else ever seems to have the numbers.

I'd be very interested, but I need something bigger.

My thoughts having just bought one and having contacted Sterillium some weeks ago when he mentioned it may go up for sale

1. Not overly, especially if it's clean and tidy. Having said that there was a 530i for £1,250 a week after I bought mine at £1,500 (Grr!)
2. My transaction was nervous and I was the buyer, especially my first ever bank transfer deal. However I was in some pain with tooth ache and I wasn't thinking straight. I didn't even check the VIN against the log book for example; a basic thing. I still haven't.
3. Personally I wouldn't care if someone drove it into a wall 5 minutes after paying me.

Are you advertising just in the PH classifieds? I’ve found them fine for specialised stuff like Caterhams, 964 etc but pretty much a waste of money for more “bread and butter” stuff. Sorry Haymarket.

Put together an EBay auction with a well written description, along with 12 good quality photographs of the car gleaming in a photogenic location. Take a deep breath, start it at a quid and seben days later the car will find its market value. Which I reckon is around your asking price anyway.

By chance I’m currently in Solihull this morning.

Driving up from London in a LS430 and returning in a V12 E65 would be grounds for divorce surely?
You know the thread motto " it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission" smile
Is the car the same colour? She may not even notice wink
Any updates? Was it the one I posted earlier?

I like the wheels, they'd look good on mine but not fussed about the staggered look. Style 33?

That is probably the shiniest E39 we've ever had on thread.

Staggered wheel / tyre setups are a massive pain in the wheelnuts. Okay, Lambos. 911s and other lairy rear- or mid-engined types may well merit them. But on sensibly balanced front engined types, no only are they generally inflicted for marketing rather than engineering purposes, but they greatly complicate getting your tyres replaced, if you want all four the same.

I'd like to see what it looks like with ordinary photos rather than saturation++ jobbys. Looks good though.

Does look nice, but a few cosmetic issues still present, seems perhaps a bit steep for a pre-facelift car....?

Pre/post facelift isn't really a valuation issue any more, not after five years of bumping along the bottom of the depreciation curve. It's all about condition, engine and spec these days.

Seconded: condition is everything now, spec becoming less of a concern imho...
