Thanks for the supporting words chap. As each day passes I get closer and closer to seeing how much of a cheeky offer Mr Bateman would accept.
I really didn't mean to be flippant here. My 'The Man' is painfully slow sometimes, then rings up after 3 months and demands payment and car removal by the end of the week. It seems 'The Man' time moves on a different time dimension from normal time where time on his side is very much shorter than my time and vice versa.

But he's good at knowing another 'The Man' who's an expert in things he's not good at. Wheel refurb, paint, audio etc.

When my SL had an annoying tendency to last only 2 weeks before draining its battery he had his electrics guy go through the car end to end, and now it sits for months without any issue at all.

Post on your local forum here and find a new 'The Man'.

Sssshhh, with all the great advice and common sense.

There's a possible and hugely memorable inter-thread E65 purchase brewing right here hehe

Depends... If it's working fine now then chances are it'll continue to do so. Parts are very tricky and often very expensive mind.

OE exhausts are especially stupid.

Yes, very true and agreed. The CL interior is miles ahead of any Jag of the same year but doesn't have the style of an XK/XJ. Mind you I thought the XJS was pretty good.

I have never understood why Jag didn't invest in decent switchgear. It can't have been that much more expensive, could it?

I haven't been in a recent Jag to know if they've improved.
Whilst it's not an XJ, but my dad has an F Type R and the interior isn't as nice as the M6 it replaced by a long way. Touchscreen interface is pretty pants, too IMO.

Sounds good, mind.

Same story with Dad's 2012 XK-R... Wonderful car, well made, pants touchscreen unit.
Of our cars, three are Jags and don't really give a hoot about touchyness of the screens.
Provided that slower stuff can be overtaken with ease where appropriate and either the cricket, BBCR4 or BBCR3 are available on the radio that's all that matters. Otherwise it's conversation or the sound of silence.

Get in, travel in comfort, arrive.

That may be so, but when spending around £100k on a car, one would expect it to be a bit better to be honest.

:This: it was the exhaust that wrote off my 05 outback earlier this year, at MOT time...

No.problem fella, the lad that's working on mine is doing it whenever there's a chance when he's at work (mainly.night shift). The problem he has is no engine codes and everything checked or replaced has been fine. Had a video from him late last night showing even idle, but he's saying it's still hesitant under load.

Get Thee to uklegacy.com

Or this thread is a good starter.

Longlife will make you a new stainless exhaust for about £500, BTW

But on the upside, you'd have been able to play 'young at heart' by the Bluebells very very loudly in your new S124 with the sooper dooper stereo.

P38 4.6, suspected head gasket. Would I be utterly nuts?

I have no mechanical skills, or time, but am officially permitted to have a "project car", so will end up with something dodgy I'm sure.

Course not. Thread hero. Go for it. And remember, research is for wimps.

That would be a very brave buy I think. Don't the bigger capacity ones have liner slip issues? Would present similarly.

Fitted the rear air spring to the 211 this afternoon, can see why that goes down as a bd job... If someone invented a magic spray that loosened rubber hoses from barbs you'd make a fortune! Nice not to have to prop the car up with a jack when left now though.

Yes, nuts or you will be shortly after purchase.

Yes, I am a certified, dyed in the wool wimp.

My well cared for low mileage P38, ran great for a few months, then it was Christmas lights time during every trip........caused me more bother than ALL my previous cars put together, was I bitter, naw just sucked lemons for breakfast every day!!!

Mate, have some dignity, please. The thread-way isn't to offer sensible advice to fellow enthusiasts, but to encourage them to do the things you haven't the balls for in order to live a more dangerous life vicariously.

There's certainly a subcurrent of this thread which normalises the kind of madness that normally gets bypassed - V12 mega barges, P38s with engine issues, 3 SLs in one sitting...

What also worries me is that it's possibly a permanent effect - see Derin buying a clutch of E85s despite trying to slim down the fleet.

Our thread isn't normal. What we do is abnormal, even by PH standards. The fact that we do it with such good grace and generosity says a lot about 'us'.

Old, expensive - potentially ruinous - and quirky (aka desperately unfashionable and sad) cars are a niche appeal. The charm of this place is the eclectic mix and almost universally helpful and supportive advice on offer. I post less than I used to these days, but this remains my go-to thread. Long may it continue.

Agreed, but then again, I'd prefer if no other PH member had to go through every one elses ground hog day in a P38!!

They are piles of crap! The truth hurts, most of the time.

Yours may have been a pile of crap. Not all are.

I only have a completely unnecessary L322, and my father had a fun filled 3.9 Classic. But in an attempt to be helpfull to the OP I found this if you fancy having a go yourself. Mostly it's a message that says "buy new bolts".

Threads like that worry me when people say rubbish like "angle tightening is a guess". Good point about new bolts though, although they can be reused if within spec. I usually just throw new ones on for the minimal cost.

And according to my LR trained indie, the L322 ain't far behind!
